Fire broke out on the City of Pittsburg near Ogden's landing in the early morning, trapping passengers as most slept. About 150 aboard, with at least half lost and many children among the dead or injured, the vessel and cargo were a total loss valued around $80,000.
Manila April 21 a court martial has been ordered for General Jacob H Smith commander of U S troops on Samar. The charge is conduct prejudicial to good order and discipline. The trial began Thursday.
Jury in Laird Charles, La., finds Edward Batson guilty of murder in the first degree for slaying the Earl family. Verdict delivered April 21, court records indicate.

Itemized costs include jail upkeep 8648.00 sheriff deputies and jail expenses 1489.35 and other charges such as clerks jurors books printing and per diem for commissioners. The report also shows fees collected by the Clerk Auditor Recorder from Jan 1 to March 31 1902 and by the Probate Judge during estate and civil matters. Sheriff revenue from fines licenses and criminal work is noted for the quarter ending March 31.
