Boise officials prepare for arrival of David Lilienthal and AEC leaders to discuss site for reactor testing station. Johnston says local labor to be used where possible and roads, schools, and commuting patterns will adapt as the project proceeds.
The 1949 Polk directory for Pocatello and Bannock County, published by R L Polk & Co, lists 19 100 residents and firms across 601 pages. It marks an increase of 2300 names since 1946 and includes separate name lists for Pocatello Alameda and Pocatello.
Boise announces the appointment of 23 fire wardens for forest protective districts in the state for the 1949 season. Wardens include James W. Farrell, Wiltord H. Quinn, James Stewart, Louie Sremolski, Andrew Lunch, Karl Klehm, Monique Kuykendall, A B Curtis, Edward Barry, Vern Spekker, K Lyman, Gilbert North, Henry Jones, Rex McCracken, Ewart Brugh, AEB Briggs, Albert Cochrell, Maurice Kelley, John Emerson, J G Kooch, Yank Moore, Arthur Roberts, and Charles Daugherty.
Idaho Farm Bureau federation plans to oppose a rehearing of Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph's proposed higher rates before the Public Utilities Commission. Alfred C. Cordon says the Farm Bureau has opposed the request and will continue to challenge any attempt to overturn the commission’s denial. The company seeks a new ruling after a 1949 denial, arguing current rates fail to cover profits and that the commission made no factual finding.
A Berlin source claims a Russian plan to lift the blockade in exchange for excluding Germany from the Atlantic Pact and allowing central Western troops to redeploy. The proposal would destabilize the new West German government and halt the rapid postwar reconstruction progress in Berlin.

Loren Pritchett allegedly drove drunk and over 35 mph, causing permanent injuries including a deep knee bruise and scarring while Mrs. Lacey was pregnant.

A severe quake struck southcentral Chile last night with initial tallies of 36 dead and over 60 injured. Traiguen appears the epicenter with reports of jail collapse killing about 30. Angol, Temuco, Los Angeles, Concepcion, Talea also reported damage or casualties.
