An official source says the Chinese government rejected the latest Communist demands, risking a major battle. Communist radio warns a veteran Red Army is ready to storm the Yangtze from Nanking to Shanghai if terms are not met.
Senate subcommittee heard railroads say a fixed 40 hour work week for all railroad employees is unnecessary and impractical. Gregory S. Prince cited that a broad minimum wage bill could pull 1,000,000 non operating workers and many operating staff under a 40 hour limit. The industry noted a 48 hour basic week but a signed agreement last month starts a 40 hour schedule Sept 1 with no pay loss.
In Dover Delaware a 43 year old mother and her two half brothers confess to killing two men linked to Lonely Hearts club letters. Police say Wade Wooldridge and Hugo Schultz were shot in the head, buried in a pigpen on the Brennan farm, dug up, burned and scattered at a city dump.
A meeting of the sixth Masonic district will be held Friday at the Masonic temple in Pocatello W V. Keystone lodge No 81 AF&AM will host with masters and representatives from Pocatello Portment lodge American Falls Montpelier Soda Springs and other lodges attending. Mrs. Anna Laura Hiatt Mitch ell 65 widow of John E Mitchell of 314 N Seventh died in a local hospital Tuesday after a lingering illness. Born March 2 1884 in Harrisville Utah she moved to Ammon Idaho as a child and to Pocatello in 1922. Survived by six children two brothers one sister and many grandchildren. Funeral arrangements by Downard mortuary.

Mr and Mrs W C Newhart sue Edwards Brennan and K B Crandall in district court for 10380 in damages from an Oct 23 1948 auto crash that left Mrs Newhart with a broken leg multiple contusions and a large hemosoma. Plaintiffs claim permanent incapacity and list medical bills surgery hospitalization lost wages and general damages.
Blackfoot community honors Edna Gillespie a 35 year library leader who grew the Blackfoot library from a basement space to a modern building. Former high school Latin teacher and member of Eastern Star PEO DAR Current Events club B and PW. Brother Ernest Gillespie and his wife traveled from California for the services. Cordell Hull, 77, former secretary of state, was discharged from Bethesda Naval Hospital after more than two years of treatment. The navy said he has made an excellent recovery and returned to his home permanently following a severe physical collapse linked to years of overwork.
Washington report confirms a 38 year rise in per person coffee consumption to 19.04 pounds in 1948, reversing 1947 decline to 17.8 pounds and nearing the 1946 peak of 19.4 pounds. The trend contrasts with a long drop since 1911 from 1.04 pounds to about half a pound.
Lion leaders in Pocatello plan a noon Wednesday address by William Featherstone of Salt Lake City former Utah Lions president at Hotel Bannock. Lou Haller leads the program with Pete Carlson presiding and Dr Vinton Merrill directing music. Leonard F Johnston of the atomic energy commission says the administrative HQ for the Arco reactor testing station remains undetermined. He outlines several reactor testing facilities on a 400000 acre sagebrush tract east of Arco and plans to inspect the site soon.
In district court defense attorney Walter H Anderson charged the police illegally arrested Forrest Poynter for driving under the influence. He claimed Poynter, with a broken jaw, was mistreated and that officers used uncoerced, unreliable evidence to label him drunk. City Attorney F E Tydeman urged a guilty verdict citing witnesses and public danger from drunk drivers.
Midway City Calif two pilots Dick Riedel and Bill Barris earned 5000 dollars from R S MacMillan president of a petroleum company to fund an endurance flight supporting their crippled son and others. The attempt began March 15 from Fullerton area with a goal of 1008 hours in the air over six weeks.

Colfax dispatch reports an inquest into the death of George McIntyre, Pullman store owner who killed four men before being shot during an Easter gunfight. Whitman County Prosecutor Lawrence Hickman said the inquest would likely be held in Pullman this afternoon to determine if McIntyre was killed by a posse or shot himself, with earlier notes placing his death at least three gunshot wounds.
New York reports Miss Tallulah Bankhead sues Procter and Gamble, NBC, CBS, and an ad agency for 1 million dollars over a Prell radio jingle that calls a tube of shampoo Tallulah. P&G says the actress fueled the identification and has no exclusive claim to the name.

Brooklyn police said Reverend James F. Brown, 28, a Negro Baptist minister, confessed to fatally beating his wife after finding her with another man. He had initially claimed two other men beat her.

The Pocatello independent school district announces a 24.5 mill levy for 1949-50, down from 25.5 mills in 1948-49. Board chairman L. C. Johnson cites weather-related maintenance and roof repairs as reasons, while outlining budget allocations for administration, instruction, operations, maintenance, libraries, health, capital outlay, and furniture. The general fund totals 781 442.50 with district valuation at 15 897 815.
