Moscow reports Soviet marines pushed through valleys southeast of Sevastopol and near linking with the fourth Ukraine army for a joint assault on the Crimean port. Axis forces are said to throw obstacles and destroy bridges while German troops shoot at retreating or surrendering Romanian allies.

Allied Forces Repel Four Raids at Anzio Front

Allied troops repulsed four raids on a position at the Anzio beachhead and reported heavy enemy losses. Along the Italian front, patrols and artillery were active with an ammunition dump destroyed. Bad weather reduced air operations but fighter-bombers flew near 1,000 sorties against German aircraft and targets near Carroceto and Cisterna.

CAP Enrolls 1000 Idaho Cadets in Training Drive

Lt. Col. Leverett Davis, Idaho wing commander of the Civil Air Patrol, said nearly 1,000 Idahoans have applied for air cadet training. CAP offers ground school, meteorology, navigation, and military training and serves as a recruiting agency for the Army Air Corps.

AFL CIO Unite In Price Demand

The AFL and CIO issued a joint statement urging Congress to extend price controls without weakening amendments. Read to the Senate Banking Committee, the plea backed by the Railway Labor Executives Association calls for restoring the pre Sept 15 1942 price wage relationship to ensure fairness and worker morale. Garfield elementary principal Robert F. Lynch died last night of a heart attack as he left the school building. Coroner William McBratney reported the death.

Airmen Strike Pacific Isles and Lend Lease Extended

U S Pacific HQ reports American airmen bombed Ponape Pakin and Ulul in the Caroline and Marshall islands dropping 42 tons of bombs. Navy search planes hit Pakin and Ulul while Ponape airfield was targeted. In Washington the House votes to extend Roosevelt's lend lease authority beyond June 30. In Calcutta British forces break through toward Kohima where Indian troops face Japanese attackers as garrison holds.

Matt Capone Sought in Larkin Slaying Case

Chicago police and Cook County, acting on a pickup order, searched for Matt Capone youngest brother of Al Capone and a suspect in the slaying of James D. Larkin gambler and former horse trainer. Wally Sanders a Cicero bartender linked to Capone's tavern also sought in the case. Larkin’s body was found shot in the head in a west side alley near Capone's Cicero tavern.

GOP Selects Chairman

The GOP arrangements committee chose Gov. Earl Warren of California as temporary chairman and keynote for the June 26 nominating convention. Danube River raiders sink ships amid minefields and fires

Allied air crews mined and attacked shipping on the Danube from Budapest to Bucharest halting traffic. A Liberator of the RCAF fired incendiaries at river craft, sinking a tanker and spreading burning oil to at least 30 other vessels while crews spoke of the dangerous low altitude operations. Flight Lt. J. H. C. Lewis of Winnipeg described the daring night raids and the explosion that lifted the plane and ignited a mass of burning craft.

In AMERICAN FALLS, Bannock deputies Ammon Hatch and R J Reynolds face trial for gambling in the Power county night club 120 feet from the county line. Power county authorities seized slot machines a roulette wheel and a craps table.

OPA Reports Progress in Gasoline Black Market Crackdown

The Office of Price Administration said there was no rise in illicit fuel diversion last month. It notes daily drain from counterfeit and stolen ration coupons at about 2.5 million gallons. Since January 1, 926 rationing arrests were made, 464 convictions secured, and 186 jail sentences handed down, with many arrests involving professional criminals.

Heart Attack Fatal to William Ennis

William Thomas Ennis 64 assistant superintendent of the UPRR died at his home 641 N Arthur Tuesday night after a sudden chest and arm pain. He was born August 16 1880 in Baraboo Wisconsin and moved to Idaho 40 years ago. Ennis began railroad service in 1904 at Glenns Ferry and rose through roles including trainmaster at Nampa and superintendent at the Pocatello terminal before his death. He also chaired the Employer Booster committee in 1939 40 and helped survey traffic to improve merchandise delivery.

Bombs Blast Truk Outpost and Pacific Targets

Solomon Islands based bombers struck the Satawan Island airstrip on Nomoi atoll in the eastern Carolines, dropping 34 tons and facing no opposition from interceptors or flak. Allied planes hit Raoul, New Britain with 125 tons, targeting airfields and supply areas. Central Pacific forces also attacked Pingelap Pakin Ant and Ulul in the Carolines and four bypassed bases in the Marshall Islands.

In Murfreesboro Tennessee election workers found no ballots at opening for two city council seats. The two unopposed candidates waited as a printer rushed out ballots yielding 130 votes before 6 p.m.

Crisman Missing In Action In Italian War Zone

Second Lieutenant William A. Crisman son of Mr and Mrs Wm F Crisman of 1455 North Garfield is reported missing in action in the Italian theater. He serves with the 341st bomb squadron and was a Pocatello high school graduate known for band involvement. He previously worked as a teletype operator for Union Pacific.

Garden winds down as Mrs Schuknecht faces losses this season

In Chicago Mrs Lois Schuknecht fears a costly harvest despite a thriving victory garden. A thief stole a suede jacket left on the lawn and her engagement and wedding rings were taken, reducing her hoped for gains.
