A New York report by Mary E. Plummer notes rising newspaper circulation and advertising nationwide, signaling a business upturn. Circulation is about 10 percent higher than last year, with retail advertising up 37.6 percent in March, and help wanted ads rising sharply as employment increases.
A federal grand jury indicted Governor William Langer and eight others in North Dakota on charges of soliciting political contributions from federal relief workers. The case centers on violations of federal law forbidding solicitation among federal employees and interference with administration of federal relief acts. Penalties include up to two years in prison or fines up to 10990 dollars.
A itinerant man was struck and killed by a car driven by Ralph Varney of Brigham City on the Salt Lake City Ogden highway near Salt Lake City. Varney said bright lights blinded him. No papers were found on the victim. Inscriptions on clothing read Nettle Ship and F. Durris.
The Senate plans to take up a sugar control bill tomorrow after Republican Leader McNary objected to an earlier move. McNary favors time to study the measure before action, while Senator Costigan (D Colo) urged immediate consideration via telegrams from sugar beet growers.
Senator King plans immediate canvass to reintroduce a bill for Philippine independence if a senate majority supports it. He and Senator Borah have long pressed for freedom, while debates over coconut oil tax exemptions and possible presidential veto shape the revenue bill and its fate.
Idaho grange members petitioned the Interstate Commerce Commission urging retention of the long and short haul clause. Representative White of Idaho presented the 10 000 member petitions arguing repeal would allow railroads to charge cheaper long haul rates over the same routes, devastating agriculture by undercutting short hauls and water competition.
Fred Avery, 66, walked 14 miles to Kentville to face a magistrate. Convicted of assault, he received a suspended sentence and began his trek back home. Two youths later launched a boat to rescue Hazel from the water.

The post office department and the army plan a 20 hour New York to San Francisco air mail route once sufficient twin motor Martin bombers arrive. New York and Chicago would be four hours apart for air mail users with mail leaving New York at 4 30 p m delivered in San Francisco the next afternoon. The Martin planes are described as the fastest military aircraft.
Paris reports that Leon Trotzky exiled Russian revolutionary was ordered to depart France by the Interior Ministry for violating political neutrality. He had lived near Barbizon since July under secret permission, with villagers alerting authorities after a raid on the secluded villa. The expulsion sparked a nationwide protest.
Idaho's gasoline tax receipts for December through March total $755,440, up more than 50 percent from the prior year’s $467,290. March alone brought in $226,253, nearly double the $125,130 collected a year ago, with open weather and stronger business activity cited as factors.
Chicago date April 17 AP report about an eight year old Warren Dawes who, after waking eager to drive a taxi, crawls into a running taxi to toy with it. He causes chaos before crashing and stalling the vehicle, leaving him dazed and injured as others in a nearby car are spared.
Payette April 17 jury selection nears completion in the Cecil Evans murder trial with 12 jurors seated. A new venire of 20 names will be called to pick the thirteenth juror as peremptory challenges limit and concerns over death penalty and circumstantial evidence loom.
Colorado Springs authorities rushed five Black residents to the state penitentiary at Canon City after crowds gathered at Paso County Jail demanding their transfer for trial. Miss Georgia Lindley identified George Williams as one attacker. James O'Brien also identified Williams from the jail visit. O'Brien, injured in the Sunday assault, provided corroborating details as the investigation unfolded.
A Seattle dog named Pal, a 10 year old collie, was adopted with 11 baby chicks. She moves about with them and they cuddle together. Last year she mothered five ducks and 69 chickens.
E C Manson appeals on behalf of the railroad community in Pocatello to support the community chest. He notes railroad families form a large portion of the city’s youth and praises local youth services provided without pay. He urges rail workers to demonstrate public spirit and contribute their share.
Raymond Perry was captured by ranchers near Beaver Creek station after a dramatic escape from the Colorado penitentiary. John Calhoun spotted Perry as he irrigated a field and alerted others. Perry fled as gunfire erupted. Green Crosby and Marvin Green were recaptured in a violent late-night pursuit, while Roy McVey and Crosby remained in custody. Claud Reeves remains at large, believed to have fled in a stolen car near Pueblo.

A brief two second quake struck Santa Ana at 10 33 am with no damage but residents fled homes and offices. The tremor, mild in Anaheim Long Beach and San Juan Capistrano, followed the March 10 1933 quake and was centered about 90 miles from Pasadena. A separate quake rattled Pocatello at 7 47 am with no damage.
A non partisan talk on Idaho liquor problems and solutions is set for 8 tonight at the Congregational church. Reverend Hugh B Fouke of Boise First Methodist, a member of the Idaho Repeal Investigation committee, will speak for the group. The discussion follows an Allied Civic Forces round table held this afternoon. Dr. John R. Nichols of the University of Idaho is also involved.
