Washington April 16 AP The congressional conferees agreed on the tariff bill setting duties on hides leather and shoes Hides 10 percent Leathers 12 to 30 percent Shoes 20 percent The Senate had restored these commodities to the free list The House won a major tariff victory by defeating Senate changes after four votes.
A chamber of commerce committee in Pocatello drew tentative plans for an armory and drill hall costing about 8000 dollars. The group, including Nicholas Ifft Ivan Gasser E J Thorkildsen and Paul Nash, will meet Captain J C Rogers and Colonel James Harris to inspect Troop B 116th Cavalry home stationed in Pocatello. The facility would serve the national guard and host ram sales and agricultural shows benefiting the community.
In Hays Kansas on April 16 a monoplane crashed in a wheat field nine miles southwest of town killing pilot Lacey. His wife and two passengers were severely injured and taken to a local hospital. Witnesses said fog and poor altitude led to the crash as the plane was demolished.

W A Whitney longtime railroad executive and former general manager of the Utah Idaho Central Railroad has died in San Francisco. He led the Central from 1917 to 1923 and held senior posts on Union Pacific Southern Pacific Oregon Short Line and Sumpter Valley. He leaves a widow and son Fred of Salt Lake City. Whitney resided in Pocatello years ago and later moved to California.
Chairman Britten of the House Naval Affairs Committee criticized the navy submarine policy amid a plan to scrap 13 obsolete boats. He cited $12 million in refits over four years as proof of poor construction and questioned U S capabilities compared with other nations. Rear Admiral Stanley admitted the B type boats are good but faulted engine development, saying the navy is making repeated failures and expressing shame at the department's submarine record.

Rioting in Calcutta last night wounded 50 people, including nine Europeans in hospital. Police routed the mob. 20 arrests made. Americans Albert Baudin of Houghton Michigan and Frank Bond Nelson of Buffalo New York reported injured but not seriously. Robert Frazer, the American consul general, confirmed the injuries.
Johanes Nehring, Germanys foremost glider pilot, died when his Junkers plane crashed during a daily weather observation flight over the Rhine at Amstadt. His observer Steinhaueser escaped by parachute after the motor failed and steering gear malfunctioned.
J W Miller of Jacksonville Florida, his wife and nine children and a black seaman were rescued by Cuban gunboat Patria after nine days at sea.
