The board of the Southern Branch ordered $30,000 returned to the regents and general fund, with $100,000 in additional savings due to shrinking income and endowment funds. The action followed at a board meeting with plans to scale expenditures for the coming biennium.
Senator Carey of Wyoming accused Secretary Hyde of opposing western irrigation in a Grange backed broadcast. He argued water from streams is vital to developing western states and that irrigation crops differ from those in other regions. Carey noted the campaign against reclamation and criticized official rhetoric to farmers.
Beverly Hills press notes the death of Bill Pickett, a popular negro performer famed for inventing the bull dogging bull riding stunt. He worked with white cowboys all his life and was said to have had no enemies. The piece notes the stunt’s thrill and the dangers it poses to riders and animals.
Dorothy Hunter an eight year old Selden Kansas girl was found dead in a haystack two miles from Achilles Rawlins county with Richard Read confessing to kidnaping and killing. A posse of Selden residents in about 50 cars hunted the sheriff and Read as the confession and hiding spot were disclosed. Read was arrested in Rexford and said to be from Selden with intoxicated appearance at arrest.
In Chicago on April 15 a thief fled with G. W. Amersons suitcase containing arsenic rat exterminator powdered glass and bedbug spray. Amerson warned the loot could kill forty men and joked about the possible dangers the thief faces if he samples it.
Dallas on April 16 reports federal prohibition agents L. C. Smith and N. D. Heaton indicted by the county grand jury on murder and assault with intent to murder in the killing of storekeeper Marion McGlothlin and wounding of his wife. Other items note Julia Lathrop's death in Rockford Newfoundland, tariff threats in Washington, Kreuger affair arrests in Stockholm, five Foshay associates fined in Minneapolis, and Wilmer Allison defeating Ellsworth Vines for the North and South tennis title in Pinehurst.
The forecast calls for a fair night and Sunday with rising temperatures, especially in the southwest portion. Overnight and Sunday will bring warmer conditions to those areas while remaining mild elsewhere.
Secretary of State Fred E. Lukens selected four white men and one Indian as Idaho’s five greats in a list sent to the governor. The nominees include Chief Joseph, W. B. Heyburn, Calvin Cobb, Frank Steunenberg, and James H. Hawley, praised for character and achievement rather than sudden fame.
Conflicting views from railway executives and labor over the four system consolidation were presented to the Interstate Commerce Commission. Carriers urged urgent action to hasten consolidation while rail labor opposed it, arguing the plan could cost many jobs and hurt the public interest. Donald R. On day 46 of the Lindbergh kidnapping the hunt yields fresh notes from Rear Admiral Burrage about a contact by John M. Curtis from Norfolk. Intermediary Dean Dobson-Peacock remains hopeful the child is alive. Dr. Condon says he has nothing new to report. A woman calling herself Greta Gray visited the Lindbergh home, prompting police to escort her to Trenton, but Minneapolis directories do not list her.
In Honolulu April 16 AP the prosecution pressed to name one of four defendants as Kahahawai’s slayer and to exclude testimony on the Mas sie attack. Prosecutor Kelley asked Darrow to specify which defendant would admit firing the fatal shot and plead insanity to guide further testimony.
George E. Gibby announces his candidacy for state senator subject to the Democratic primaries. He is a local insurance agent with years of residence and prominence in Democratic politics.
The funeral for Mrs. Mary Trimming 84 a pioneer resident of Pocatello who came there in 1887 was held Thursday afternoon at a local mortuary chapel with Rev I Q Wood of the Episcopal church officiating Surviving are two daughters Mrs Clarence Rainey of Pocatello and Nora Verley of Oregon City Oregon 14 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren She resided at 2185 Jenson
A Bronx tenement blaze killed six people including two adults and four children. The Dombril family perished on the third floor while the Weinstein children died after rescue attempts. several others escaped or were hospitalized with burns. Firemen aided evacuations as alerts sounded through the smoky building.
Payette Idaho April 16 gas erupted at the Big Willow Creek well of the Boise Petroleum Corp fifteen miles from Payette in commercial quantities. The well stood at 1280 feet when gas appeared whitish gas and heavy rumblings followed. the well was capped and test machinery is being brought in. Several Payette wells in recent years have shown gas but none had been commercially used.
Two year old Robert Price was abducted from his grandparents in San Diego by entering through a cut screen. The boy, son of Melvin and Mrs Price, with the father a former Marine officer, is missing as police and the grandfather coordinate a search. The parents reportedly separated in New York City six weeks earlier and Mrs. Price is hospitalized in a sanitarium.
Senator I J Dickinson of Iowa selected as temporary chairman of the Republican national convention by the arrangements committee He will deliver the keynote address Senate S D Fess of Ohio announced the choice shortly after sessions opened at the Congress hotel Lafayette B Gleason of New York named secretary of the convention
Washington reports growing support for Byrd plan to resubmit the 18th amendment. In Capitol hearings press toward Senate vote on resubmission as Wyoming senators Kendrick and Carey back bringing prohibition to the people. Bishop James Cannon Jr backs Byrd plan at Jefferson Day rally in Richmond with Democratic leaders.
Owen D. Young telegrams Representative Patman saying he supports higher money volume but rejects printing currency to cash the soldiers' bonus. He argues a $2,000,000,000 budget increase through printing money would burden the general welfare, and favors currency expansion via bank credit instead of direct issuance.
President Hoover seeks congressional authority for a broad government reorganization to cut expenditures. Budget director J C Roop outlined an omnibus retrenchment bill to consolidate and reduce costs in public works health personnel and merchant marine, facing opposition from Senator Borah who favors salary cuts over furloughs and cautions against lowering very low salaries.
