Senate Debates Chinese Exclusion Bill in Washington
In Washington on April 16 the Senate opened early for extended debate on the Chinese exclusion bill. Telegrams from the Pacific coast favored the Platt substitute. twelve opposed it. The Dillingham amendment for Chinese mercantile representation was defeated 8 to 57. Platt’s substitute passed 48 to 83, with the St. Louis exposition exempt provision and Mitchell’s Philippines timing measure adopted 41 to 40.
