A powerful earthquake struck early today with shocks lasting over two hours. Observers in Albany and Washington reported extreme ground motion, noting a global disturbance felt across seismograph stations worldwide.
The U S Supreme Court dismissed a writ of error and sustained the Colorado Supreme Court which fined former Senator Thomas M Patterson of Colorado $1000 for contempt. Patterson, owner of the Denver Times and Rocky Mountain News, faced contempt over papers implying Colorado’s election decisions favored corporate interests during the 1904 campaign.
Dr William Thomas Phy medical superintendent of Hot Lake sanitarium Oregon travels via Pocatello on No 2 to Kansas City to attend the University Medical College class of 97 reunion where he has been elected president for life. He is joined by his wife and Irving Wright and will return through Arkansas Hot Springs and San Bernardino where his father resides. A $100000 addition is under construction at the Hot Lake hotel under Dr Phy.
United States senator Robert M. Lafollette, a Wisconsin politician and 1908 presidential prospect, signed the Bannock hotel register yesterday morning. He lectured at Idaho Falls last Saturday and was billed for Pendleton tonight before departing west on No. 5.
Delphin M. Delmas, who led Harry Thaw's defense, severed ties with the case and was replaced by D. J. O Regan. Thaw opposed Dr Hamilton testifying to insanity and ordered Hamilton removed, prompting Delmas to call him when the doctor was excused. O Reilly expects to secure Thaw bail next week.
In Lodz Russian Poland on April 15 a report states one hundred workmen were killed or wounded during the past month amid ongoing labor troubles.
Major Fred R. Reed, land commissioner for the North Side Land and Water company, visits Pocatello en route to Butte to announce the Carey Act land opening at Milner on April 22. Interested entrants must register with the state land board, pay 3.25 per acre for up to 160 acres, and secure a water right before drawing. Entries follow a numbered order. if land is unavailable, money is returned.
A Pocatello man named Judge F OS Dietrich was sworn in as United States district judge for Idaho in Boise. Judge Beatty stepped down, Dietrich pledged to administer justice impartially and serve the state. Dietrich will hold the Pocatello term on April 22 and Moscow in May before relocating to Boise.
In Concord on April 15 Henry Baker Archibald McLellan and Josiah Fernald trustees of Mrs Mary Baker Eddy estate filed a motion in superior court asking that the next friends of Mrs Eddy be required to show cause why the trustees motion to substitute themselves as plaintiffs should not be granted The action is part of the accounting suit over Mrs Eddy property and leadership of the Christian Science church.
Mayor Walter H. Cleave says a citywide cleanup day is impractical but directs Chief of Police Smith to visit property owners this week and order debris removal at private expense under arrest risk. The Tribune quotes the mayor stating past laxity should not be subsidized.
Great Northern westbound train No. 1 jumped the track at Devil's Lake North Dakota. Mail clerk and several passengers were badly hurt with reports of fatalities. Initial word blank but later reports indicated six dead and a fire aboard the wrecked train.
Sheriff Quigley and Deputy McGarvey arrested John Falls in a north town shack last week. Mrs. Chapman identified him as one of two men who demanded money under threat. Falls is described as dangerous and troublesome in jail, with recent altercations among inmates.
In Dunkie two groups clashed after a mob of white men tried to seize a black man accused of assault. The captive was taken by Black residents who fled. injuries occurred among the white crowd and later reports denied that the Black crowd fired on them.
The Ninth annual conference of the L D S Sunday schools in the Pocatello stake convened at the L D S Church with good attendance. Three meetings were held with Stake Superintendent L C Pond presiding. Elders George M Cannon and Horace M Cummings addressed the children on faith and baptism at proper age. An officers meeting reviewed questions on school improvement in the afternoon.
In Jefferson City Missouri on April 15 a sensational disclosure shows a bill from the last legislature about county court location was doctored to look as if it failed. The bill was not sent to the governor for signature and the move aimed to conceal the deception.
A Japanese man with an unpronounceable name is jailed awaiting trial before Police Judge Knowles on a disturbance charge. He allegedly caused a rough scene at a Jap restaurant on North First Avenue Saturday night, assaulting two countrymen, breaking chairs, smashing a clock, and fueling a fighting jag.
United States District Attorney Norman Mihuick passed through Pocatello on delayed No. 2 en route to Washington. He carried indictments from the Boise federal grand jury for submission to the Department of Justice, including one against Senator Borah. He will be away from Idaho about two weeks.
