Firemen fought ten fires yesterday and a string of blazes at dawn in south Chicago, all apparently incendiary. The fires caused about 50 000 dollars in total losses though the buildings were not near each other. Fire officials label the incidents as the work of an arsonist.
London April 12 reports show Sir Michael Hicks Beach and Joseph Chamberlain at a cabinet council with Bank of England delegates. The budget and best methods to issue the war loan were the main topics as ministers weigh war tax strategies. Chamberlain issued a signed denial of a cabinet crisis over funding methods.

Salt Lake dispatch from Evanston Wyoming reports two clashes between Union Pacific brakemen and railroad special police and a hoboe gang. Brakeman F G Schwartz and a tramp were severely wounded as shots were exchanged during ejecting the gang from an eastbound train near Granger. The special police intervened and the gang was arrested.
Rev L L Shearer a former Baptist minister shot himself in the head at his Weiser home Friday despondency cited as the cause. He had been ill with consumption and bedbound for six months. Mrs Shearer found him in bed after a state of great suffering and learned he left a note explaining his deed.
