President Roosevelt announced the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden are reopened to American ships. Vessels may sail to the Suez Canal as Egypt remains neutral. War supplies to belligerents are restricted under the neutrality act.
The Idaho Congress of Parents and Teachers closes its 36th annual convention with a firm stance on promoting scientific education for youth and adults to curb liquor and narcotics related harms. Nampa chosen as 1942 conference center. Mrs R L Brainard of Wardner to continue as president with staff.
BELVIDERE N J April 11 An explosion in the Hercules powder plant in Belvidere caused one death and four injuries. Charles Haycock 21 of Belvidere died in Phillipsburg N J hospital about two hours after the blast. Company said only minor property damage confined to one building and a small block of nitrated cotton involved. Hospital at Phillipsburg treated three victims. one injured survivor reported a powder press jam caused the explosion. Residents heard ambulances from Phillipsburg and Easton 12 miles away with no official cause yet given.
Worship at the Chief theater between 12 15 and 12 45 p m was held under the Pocatello Ministerial Association. Walter H Cleare spoke on the Significance of Good Friday and Eastertide. Rev Paul De Mortimore gave the prayer. Rev E T Ferry read the Scriptures and Dr Rolla C Speer gave the benediction. Two anthems were sung by the Methodist church choir.

U S May Build In Greenland Without Formal Maneuver Roosevelt signs a resolution backing non recognition of any transfer of western hemisphere land between non American powers one day after Greenland was brought into the hemisphere defense system Washington April 11 AP The move underscores defense planning and regional sovereignty concerns.
Washington reports rapid U S fortification plans in Greenland with air bases and sea plane facilities to deter German flights. Hull and Danish minister sign defense accord allowing construction of landing fields and meteorological installations to block aggression toward the Americas.
An 18 year old orphan, John Panek, confessed to killing probation officer Ernest Wehr, 43, in Joliet Illinois. Deputy Sheriff Walter Krohn said Panek was raised in an orphanage and ward of the county court. State's Attorney James E Burke stated Panek apparently killed Wehr to obtain his money and car.
Dr. Vic Mae Powell of Idaho Southern University announced that Buhl, from the Twin Falls district, will represent the section at the upcoming state festival after judging the district contest. The event in Twin Falls featured more than 35 plays along with extemporaneous oratory and impromptu work.
Governor Murray D Van Wagoner of Michigan announced the Ford River Rouge shutdown ended after a 10 day CIO strike. The move affected about 200000 workers nationwide and followed Edison era bargaining. Federal officials warned similar actions at General Motors could impact 130000 workers. Negotiations continue on coal mine contracts and wage requests at Bethlehem Steel and Allis-Chalmers.
London bulletin reports a state of siege in Turkey with civilian evacuation from the Dardanelles and large parts of European Turkey to Anatolia. Italian troops occupy Ohrid and join Hitler regiments per Rome wireless. Southern coal operators say conference to settle miners contract in Appalachian states boosted. One dead and 14 injured when Woodward Iron plant roof collapses in Birmingham with rescue efforts hampered by blast debris.
Special Easter services will be held Sunday evening at 6 39 o clock in the Fourth ward L D chapel. Bishop Robert M Garbett presides alongside President W P Whitaker of the southern States mission and Mrs Whitaker. Speakers include Miss Jessie Thompson recently called to the southern states mission and Miss Phyllis Madsen who returned from the western states mission. The musical program features the choir and the Fourth ward elders chorus with Elder Heber Hansen delivering the benediction.
TM-Chem ical brakes on the development of fruits and vegetables in the early spring to avoid late killing fruits were described to the American Chemical society by Dr. Carl G. Vinson of the University of Mis souri. Sprays made of water solutions of the leaves of peach, cherry, cot tonwood, eldm and oak trees have been found "very effective" in de laying the growth of buds until the danger of freezing is over, after which they develop normally in spring heat and sunshine, he declared.

The secretary Thelma Crowell announced campaign dates for the Poca community chest from October 6 to 13 as the annual fund drive for 1942. The committee includes A J Banyard R J Cox L E Glennon Pred Hilliar R D Merris. Dr Ray J Davis is president of the 1942 chest board. A chairman will be elected at a future meeting.
American Falls reports power county rural schools will observe Arbor Day on Friday April 25 with planting shrubs and trees and special exercises. In districts unable to plant trees the day will be devoted to cleaning the school grounds.
British forces confront German blitzkrieg in northern Greece as Lieut. Gen. Sir Henry Maitland Wilson assumes command of Allied defenses. Churchill praises him as a top tactician while Axis and British units maneuver in eastern Cirenaica and near Gebel Achdar as great battles loom near Bitolj and Monastir.

Gem Valley lodge Malad and Portneuf lodge Pocatello members visited Blackfoot lodge on Thursday April 10. They presented a Friendship Gavel and Register to be signed by Blackfoot members who will pass them to an Odd Fellow lodge of their choice. The chain continues until every Idaho lodge has held the items, then they return to Boise and are placed in a Caldwell grand secretary vault. Attending from Malad and Pocatello were W. J. Watts W. C. Easter Seals sale ends Saturday with Richard H. Wells announcing the cutoff for the annual fair run by the Easter Seal committee. Proceeds aid county state and national units for crippled children. The Idaho Society for Crippled Children plans to register, diagnose, and treat crippled kids and provide vocational guidance and education. Seals are sold through the Best Letter Shop in Pocatello.
A dinner reception and conferring of degrees will mark the official visitation Monday evening April 4 to Bannock Council No 2 Royal and Select Masters of Frank W Perry of Pocatello. Perry is the most illustrious grand master of Idaho Royal and Select Masters. Dinner at 6 30 p m at the Masonic temple followed by grand master reception election of candidates and conferring of degrees per E L Dale illustrious master.
