Wade Hampton of Columbia died at 9 o'clock this morning at age eighty four after a decline from a general breakdown. Born in 1818 he led Hampton's Legion in the Civil War and served as brigadier and later major general. He became governor of South Carolina in 1876 and later a U S senator noted for conservative Democratic stances.
An old advertisement touts Lane's Tes as a remedy to stop bad breath and keep the mouth and bowels in proper condition. It claims to cleanse breath and is offered for sale at Sprague's Pharmacy.
Henry Fletcher, a Black man, was hanged at sunrise for the murder of 16-year-old Louis Roth in 1900. A late telegram grant for a 15 day respite arrived, while officials debated a reprieve. Governor Dockery had not intervened before the drop and stated the execution would have occurred anyway.
Reports from Klerksdorp show Stein Dewet and Delarey with staffs arriving at noon to discuss terms while a conference tent sits on neutral ground between old and new towns. London says negotiations will be prolonged with Boers on the continent and cabinet summons are issued amid rumors from Kitchener dispatches.

Reports from Brussels and surrounding districts describe large scale rioting as workers clash with gendarmes. Wounded estimates range from forty to one hundred with many injured hidden by friends. Martial law may be proclaimed if unrest persists into Monday.
In Washington April 11 the Senate agreed to vote on the Chinese exclusion bill before adjournment Wednesday. The River and Harbor bill was placed on the calendar and minor measures were approved. Long of Kansas argued for reciprocity, stating it is now Republican doctrine and noting beet sugar prices for Michigan, Nebraska, and Colorado producers under Cuba concessions.
London reports Frederic Rutherford Harris, former secretary of the Chartered South Africa Company, responding to a telegram rumor about Boer leaders accepting British terms by saying the rumor is entirely without foundation.
Portland April 11 Democratic state convention nominated George B. Chamberlain of Portland for governor by acclamation and adjourned until today. The reconvened session completed the nominations for state officers including Supreme Judge B. F. Bonham of Marion county Secretary of State D. W. Sears of Polk Treasurer Henry Blackman of Marrow county Attorney General J H Raley of Umatilla State Printer J E Godfrey of Marion county.
Harry Cone, crippled by rheumatism, crawled on a sled and walked on crutches for nearly 70 miles from Thunder Mountain to Dixie, after a five day journey from a remote camp. He returned to Grangeville days ago, having been ill for three weeks at the camp.
Dublin dispatch says ten battalions of English and Scotch militia will be embodied and sent to Ireland within a month to enforce the coercion act. The move follows the determination to apply force to quell unrest.
Detroit April 11 Professor Joseph M. Miller confessed at noon to killing Carrie M. Jonnett. The case centers on the murder and the alleged motive and investigation details are expected to follow.
The President today transmitted to the Senate the nomination of James P. Garfield of Ohio as United States Civil Service Commissioner.

The Board of Trustees of the Academy of Tdabo elected Prof. J. W. Faris returns to Pocatello after previously serving as superintendent of public schools and leading the business department at Logan Agricultural College.
The Fort Hall reservation allotment schedule has been approved and a date for offering remaining lands for settlement nears. Plats will be prepared in Washington, with distribution by lot for lands outside Pocatello five miles from improvements. Snow covers the mountains, water supply looks good, and cattle are in good condition for next year’s beef.
Washington April 11 Eugene F Ware of Kansas selected by the President to succeed H Clay Evans as commissioner of pensions. Ware, from Topeka, Kansas, is a member of the law firm Gleed Ware Gleed.
The Pocatello Chamber of Commerce board discussed acquiring park sites and forming a fair association. A committee will scout park locations near the city to rest visitors on Sundays and holidays. Another group will push formation of a fair with a mile track grandstand and baseball facilities, aiming for fall races. The board meets again Saturday.
John Rooney switchman died at about four oclock yesterday afternoon from shock and probable internal injuries after being crushed under a car. An inquest was held at Manassa's parlors as Rooney's remains were to be sent to Eau Claire Wisconsin for interment by his brother in law J J Cline who was en route to recover the body. He had been a member of the Brotherhood of Railway Train but had dropped out.
