More than 30 people, including three children, were trapped on Berthoud Pass summit after avalanches blocked both approaches. A snowslide west of the limit buried two utes and a snowplow, injuring Lt. Helen Durfee and trapping Edith Foster who tunneled eight feet to surface. More slides roared across Highway 40 on both sides as snowplows worked.
Lt. Paul Geddes of McCammon is praised by Randall Jacobs for courage as commanding officer of the U S navy armed guard on board the S S Ties. Geddes directed gun crews during an Oct 21 1943 enemy air attack, aiding in shooting down two planes before abandoning a fatally damaged ship.

Norman Davis five year old son of Mr and Mrs L R Davis Twin Falls was injured when he fell on his father's hunting knife after removing it from the glove compartment of the family car. The blade penetrated the left abdomen near the back and injured intestines and a major blood vessel. He withdrew the knife and returned it to the glove compartment before reporting the injury.

Attorneys for 34 defendants facing state charges ask a one week postponement for preliminary hearings on conspiracy to advocate polygamy and waive hearings on unlawful co habitation. Local boards will not defer all over 26, and those already ordered for induction must report unless they receive postponement at the induction station.
A Czech brigade with the Red army moved toward the front to be among the first units to enter old Czechoslovakia. Gen Heliodor Pika said his mission requested the Czech unit be allowed to enter their homeland as first liberators. No definite news of allied entry into Czechoslovakia via the Carpathians.
Stalin announced the capture of Odessa, a key Black Sea port, after a two month siege and 905 days of occupation. The Germans evacuated at night, blowing demolitions and retreating by sea. Stalin framed the victory as clearing a path to the central regions of Romania and a major step in the Red Army advance.
David S. Romney named mayor of Ogden succeeding Pvt. Bramwell now at Fort Douglas. Romney, longtime Ogden figure, led local Boy Scouts council and served as Mount Ogden ward bishop. He married Daisy Rolapp in 1921. their daughter Katherine Ann attends the University of Utah.
