London reports a large naval clash off Norway's northwestern coast at Narvik where five British and six German destroyers exchanged fire. The British claim a victory with sunk German ships and merchant losses, while two British destroyers were lost and others damaged. Details remained guarded amid war secrecy.
Police and sheriffs search for two men suspected in a Tuesday evening holdup of A. R. Fletcher at 1255 East Clark. Fletcher reported the assailants searched him on the sidewalk then forced him to walk to Whitman and Arthur before fleeing toward Halliday Street subway, taking his watch and pocket knife and later a wallet with cash and a railroad pass. One suspect about 20, six feet tall, wore a dark jacket and cap. the other about 25, five foot six, in heavy dark clothing.
Edsel Ford told the federal monopoly committee that a popular-priced car now about $700 would rise to over $17,000 if built by hand labor instead of machines. He warned at $17,000 only about 50 cars a year could be sold and most of Ford's 125,000 workers would lose jobs. The Ford president testified on technology and labor saving machinery during hearings on concentration of economic power.
London reports two British destroyers and one German destroyer sunk at Narvik as Axis and Allies fight for Norway. Berlin notes loss of two cruisers and claims hits on British ships while negotiating with Norway. Stockholm cites Norwegian and Swedish neutral positions as battles continue along the coast. Reykjavik notes Iceland’s parliament takes control of foreign relations amid German occupation of Denmark.
State police reported a late afternoon accident seven miles east of Bancroft where Edwin Hymas’s vehicle struck a bridge and damaged both. A nephew, also named Hymas, was believed injured and transported to a Montpelier hospital. Officer James Bowns investigated.
Henry Huether, a resident north of the city, is free on $500 bond after arraignment before Justice of the Peace William Ryan on a burglary charge. The burglary complaint, signed by T. H. Gathe, alleges Huether leased a farm from Gathe about four miles north of the city and burglarized it upon returning.
Film actress Sonja Henie arrived in San Francisco weak after a throat infection required emergency surgery at a spa. She was cared for by a nurse in her stateroom on the Lurline and was to stay in bed until Los Angeles. The ship docked today after sailing from Honolulu.
Norwegian refugees in Sweden report the coast defense ships Norge and Eidsvold sunk at Narvik after dawn attacks. German troops seized the port with about 2,000 men, after an early torpedo strike and street fighting, as Narvik fell with little opposition.
Reports from London and Stockholm said British forces retook the western Norwegian ports of Bergen and Trondheim after their seizure by Germany, but official British sources did not confirm the reports.
The Idaho Falls cases were heard in Pocatello during the spring session. W A Sewart seeks damages from the city over a sidewalk fall. The American National Bank sues to collect warrants from the joint independent school district. A third civil suit involves Ralph J Baldwin and F K Mittry. All Monday cases were taken under advisement.
Norwegian troops, aiding the government and royal family fled to Elverum 75 miles north of Oslo as German forces assault the town. About 200 Norwegians were killed or wounded with German losses unknown, while reinforcements were rushing in to defend the capital. The fleeing government may seek refuge near Sweden if Oslo falls.
Delbert Draper, a prominent Utahn, will address a record crowd at the Jefferson day banquet in the Bannock hotel at 7 p.m. Thursday. Arthur W. Hall says ticket sales exceed expectations and the event will be among the largest Jefferson day celebrations. Toastmaster will be B A McDevitt. organizers include Arthur Hall and several named helpers.
The 54 year old Frances Hardy faces a first degree murder charge with a preliminary hearing set for Thursday at 10 am in the police station council chambers. She is jailed without bail after being arrested by Chief Pugmire and Chief Roubidoux following a coroner verdict that her husband died of gunshot wounds. Two telephone operators testified to quarrels in the Hardy home while on the line.
Two couples from Paris Idaho obtained marriage licenses in Salt Lake City yesterday. Charles Howard Wyler 23 and Irene Spencer 20, and Wilford Joseph Michel 30 and Thelma Grandy Stoddard 21.
Illinois Democrats backed a third term for Franklin D. Roosevelt by a heavy margin in the presidential preference primary. Roosevelt led Garner by about six to one, with 813,064 to 131,369 from 5,741 of 8,336 precincts. Dewey captured 491,460 votes, about 90 percent of the Republican total for the two candidates. Projections showed Roosevelt plus Garner around 1,370,000 versus Dewey about 796,000. Chicago yielded Roosevelt’s strongest showing as party leadership shaped the result.
The Osso and Copenhagen capitals fall to Nazi control joining Vienna and Warsaw in rapid conquest sequence. The report cites Austria and Poland as prior targets with Milan cities omitted and dated March 13 1938 for Vienna and September 27 1939 for Warsaw, noting Oslo and Copenhagen now under occupation.
President Roosevelt extends the European combat zone to cover the entire Scandinavian peninsula from Bergen to the Russian mainland, prohibiting American ships from operating in these waters. The zone also blocks entry to the White Sea and Russian ports Archangel and Murmansk, with penalties of fines and imprisonment for violations. Utah weather noted as partly cloudy with colder temperatures and frost in the north.
Berlin reports that German naval forces defending Narvik area destroyed three British destroyers and damaged another as they acknowledged the loss of two cruisers, Bluecher and Karlsruhe, to Norwegian coastal fire during a Norway landing operation. The communique cited German successes against British naval units off Norway’s west coast while dismissing the Norwegian government in exile.
Blaine county officers sought to identify a man who died in Hailey after the stolen car he drove rolled from the highway 18 miles northeast of Carey and crashed on a desert lava bed. The man, about 25, died five hours later in hospital. a tire blew while fleeing authorities.
Three delegates will represent Idaho Southern University at the Western convention of Associated Women Students to be held at the University of Oregon in Eugene on April 15 and 16. Lois Potter of Pocatello, president of the AWS, Virginia Ann Chase of Piler, president elect, and Sarah Lutes, dean of women, leave Saturday for the event.
