City leaders back a Greater Pocatello plan as the chamber begins a five day education drive ahead of a one day membership event on April 12. Mayor Phillips proclaims Chamber of Commerce Day and urges residents to join in the push for 300 new members.
IDAHO FALLS four mayors from Arco Blackfoot Idaho Falls and Pocatello met at City hall to form a permanent group to address mutual problems from the atomic energy plant in southeastern Idaho. they organized a committee to meet gov robins in Boise and will telegram plant manager leonard e johnston seeking boundary lines and an early meeting date to aid coordination.
State land near the atomic reactor site at Arco will be sold to private buyers if grazing leases are not disturbed. The land board approved sale of 710 acres in Ada County 640 in Power 320 in Bannock and 530 in Jefferson. Timber on two 100 acre tracts in Latah and a placer mining lease on 80 acres in Idaho County were also approved.
Mayor George R. Phillips proclaims April 12 as Pocatello Chamber of Commerce Day urging every citizen to become better acquainted with the chamber as the city anticipates unusual activity and development beyond normal government.
City Attorney F E Tydeman who said the repeal issue could run on April 26 now agrees with C R Baum’s interpretation of state law. United Nations steering committee rejected Russian protests and ordered broad General Assembly debate on communist prosecutions.
A 50 member VFW delegation welcomes National Commander Lyall Beggs to Pocatello Idaho. He arrives on Union Pacific No. 11 at 10 45 pm for a reception at Hotel Bannock and a 50th anniversary observance at Memorial hall Friday. A 10 am press conference and 1 30 pm general session precede a 7 30 pm banquet and a 10 am Saturday street parade led by the high school band and National Guard.
Jaycee bosses and members convene for a 7 p.m. steak dinner at Hotel Whitman with Dr Parry Harrison as toastmaster and Harold Read welcoming the group. Arnold Lintelmann will fiddle, Barry Gordon will imitate Alverson, and Capt. Lee Sumpter will loan an Army day film. Lew Harrison and John Read supervise arrangements.
The council approved Allied Civic Forces petition to put repeal or retention of the slot machine ordinance on the April 26 general election ballot but may face an injunction. The push cites 1,748 registered voters and debates state law requiring local recall and referendum ordinances before such a vote.
City council annexed a 10 acre tract adjoining the south side. The site, owned by Theodore Turner Jr, includes the Shamrock club and two five acre parcels plus about 30 additional acres. Turner and attorney Roy L. Black signed waivers. city waivers fire protection sewer services and allows future liquor and slot licenses. Ordinance passed to take effect after publication.
Lorin A. Murdock and Howard W. Tucker each fined 2.50 for failing to observe stop lights. Paul J. Haislip forfeits 2.50 bond. John Cast forfeits 15 for intoxication after a fall on North Main. John J. Schwaber pays fine for reckless driving.
City council approved Diamond Cab’s change to Yellow Cab name for its seven taxi licenses. The move requires corresponding updates to insurance policies and corporate records.
At Lake Success, Soviet Deputy Foreign Minister Malik urged the UN to stay out of Hungary and Bulgaria trials. He condemned Cardinal Mindszenty and 15 Bulgarian Protestant clergymen as war invaders and argued the charter bans external interference. Mindszenty faces a life sentence for black market, treason, and plots to topple the regime.
In Effingham Illinois the St Anthony s hospital fire increased the dead to 70 and missing to 5 as the city buries more victims. The Catholic chancery reports most bodies identified except seven while Mrs Elizabeth Schuette 78 dies from burns and shock at an Effingham residence.
Ogden police reported to Sheriff Alma Marley that a 1949 Chevrolet convertible bearing license A 6646 was stolen there. It was seen between McCammon and Pocatello at 2 p m yesterday.
University of California professor Dr George W Hahn told 4000 California dentists that lazy mothers cause rabbitlike facial features in children. He cited delayed feeding schedules and thumb sucking as causes and suggested mittens to curb the habit.
