Jacqueline Cochran, famed aviatrix, flew 2000 kilometers in about 3 hours 45 minutes to claim a new distance record, besting the prior 311 mph benchmark set by Ernst Seibert. Flying a single engine Sever sky monoplane, she faced sleet near Albuquerque but kept to altitude around 16,000 feet with brief throttle reductions to ensure visibility.

Detroit April 6 A 21 year old John Kurzawa confessed that he and 22 year old John Kasap killed Philip Loyst to steal his second hand car and buried him in a basement grave. Prosecutor Duncan C McCrea said Kurzawa described luring Loyst to a rented east side house and Kasap firing two shots in the back and once in the head. The confession aims to solve the Loyst death, with a second killing, Dorsey E Bowman, still under investigation. Officials note a possible murder for profit gang linked to car thefts.
Ontario Oregon April 6 coroner's jury absolved C B Hudson a farmer of blame in the accidental shooting death of his wife while he was cleaning a gun. The jury called by Coroner R A Tacke termed the death accidental.
Idaho farmer H. M. Williams aged 72 from Chester was fatally struck on the Salt Lake City Ogden road near Woods Cross while returning from a church meeting with his wife. He was crossing the road after stopping at a cottage camp when hit by a car driven by R. W. Stephens of Pocatello. Williams leaves a widow five sons and a daughter.
A wild gas well near Lyons Kansas blanket threatens two miles with low clouds and shifting wind. Railroads and salt mines warned. two state highways may suspend traffic. One death linked to the drive transporting crews to the well, driver W M Mitchell of Mitchell Drilling Co. died in a flaming truck crash.
Cleo Fox of Downey faces district court after a preliminary hearing before Justice N R Olson. Fox was bound over on a statutory rape charge with bond set at 1500 dollars and is held in Bannock county jail awaiting trial.
A Walker hound nicknamed Old Climber was spotted high in a leaning tree, about 30 feet up, during a Fox Hunters club pack in Jenkins County, Ga. The sighting drew attention from local hunters and residents.

Mrs. Frances Dick Hardy, 54, was charged with first degree murder after a fatal shooting of her husband Charles E. Hardy, 59, district treasurer for Brotherhood of Railway Trainmen, at their home in Salt Lake City. She was jailed without bail, arraigned and scheduled for a preliminary hearing as the coroner’s jury returned a verdict of gunshot death.

Boise April 6 Attorneys across southern Idaho invited to a legal institute next Wednesday sponsored by the Third District Bar Association. Experts from the Securities Exchange Commission will speak.
Bannock county farmers vote on Saturday to create the Portneuf watershed soil conservation district. Of about 1,800 eligible, 227 cast ballots with 217 for and 10 against. Official results await state commission action and two county supervisors will be named.
Duncan M. Johnston former Twin Falls mayor on trial for murder denies knowing who buried a .25 caliber pistol, keys, and two diamond rings in Olson's basement. Defense cites gun repairs and engraving attempts. Johnston says he sold the pistol years ago and did not instruct anyone to bury the items. The cross examination continues as the trial proceeds.
Foreign Minister Halvdan Koht warned parliament that Norway would be at war at once if free shipping in Norwegian waters were hindered to aid either side in the European war. Carl Ernst, charged with burglary of the Frazier grocery, was returned to the county jail from Gumet hospital Saturday morning. He bore buckshot wounds to the face reportedly from the store owner firing a shotgun at a man leaving the premises.
Idaho state pardon board freed 84 of 171 applicants today, granting six pardons while continuing cases for John McClurg of Emmett and four others. Warden Meredith warned the prison must shrink funding use. the facility has about 25 percent of its appropriation left for nine months.
Two student nurses at Pocatello General hospital were injured in an automobile accident on North Fifth Avenue Saturday night. Ramona Saar, 21, Idaho Falls, suffered a broken right ankle and Joyce Dawson, 21, Salmon, a head injury. Both were listed in good condition. The crash occurred when Frank Decker, 21, slowed to test his brakes and Gene Caccia, 25, rear ended Decker’s car, damaging both vehicles.
In Mankato Minnesota an eight year old girl and a seven year old boy kept attending school for a full year while living in parked cars and hotel lobbies. County welfare paid for their transport to Worthington where relatives live and they were admitted to a cl grade.
