London reports a renewed German effort south of the Somme failed to widen the salient or gain significant ground. Allied forces repulsed attacks along a 30 mile front and a later 17 mile sector north of the river, with only slight advances by German troops near Amiens.
Petrograd dispatch says two German warships and torpedo boats landed at Eknes southeast of Helsingfors and occupied the area. Russian ships in Hango harbor were unable to stop the entry and the sailors scuttled their vessels to avert capture.
Amsterdam reports a Berlin official statement claiming the Paris bombardment was halted on Wednesday to honor the funeral of the Swiss legation's counselor in Paris. He was among church worshippers when a shell struck a Paris church on Good Friday.
Allied dispatches report heavy combat north and south of Albert as German forces pierce a small triangular area just south and west of the town. The attack targets the Albert Dernancourt sector along a 9000 yard front near the Albert Amiens railway.
The annual budget shows a surplus of $2,850,000 due to favorable weather and strong revenue. No new taxes are proposed for the year, but a continued British war loan will remain at the same amount as last year.
Amsterdam reports an official Vienna announcement quoted Foreign Minister Czernin claiming France sought a peace conversation with Austria-Hungary. Premier Clemenceau had denied such talk the day before.
Chicago April 5 corn trades at 1.26 and oats at 88 cents per bushel in a concise market note from the Chicago trading floor.
The Federal Trade Commission orders ninety seven western lumber firms to stop unfair competition. Minneapolis detective Luke Boyce is barred from using bad faith or subterfuge to obtain customer lists or to aid Platt B. Walker in influencing mail order suppliers. Affected firms include Gibson Faw Lumber & Mercantile Co in Colona Colorado Pioneer Lumber Co in Sheridan Wyoming Standard Lumber Co in Moscow Idaho Potlatch Lumber Co in Potlatch Idaho.
Washington reports special efforts under way to sell bonds to farmers and small town residents. Educational work began before the loan, using agricultural journals and weekly papers to explain why Americans should buy bonds. The publicity bureau directed by Henry Minor sends press matter to papers, with editors promoting patriotic duty. Granges and country schools join in expanding rural subscriptions.
Washington reports Japanese naval forces landed at Vladivostok to protect life and property after an attack on a Japanese office by five armed Russians. One Japanese man was killed and two wounded. the force on the ground is described as small.
In Collinsville Illinois on April 5 a mob of miners abducted Robert Prager from authorities and lynched him at midnight after he made remarks deriding President Wilson in Marysville Illinois. The lynching was carried out by a group claiming to act on behalf of the community. Prager prayed in German for three minutes before the attack.
A letter from Albert Cohn of the Los Angeles Chamber of Commerce praises the Pocatello Red Cross Canteen and Refreshment units. He notes postcards, fruit, cigarettes, tobacco, magazines, and candy for soldiers and medical service along the train route. He says soldiers were treated well and thanks the town for courteous reception.
Liberty Loan campaign begins with speeches at shops depots and cinemas. Supreme Justice Alfred Budge to address 8:30 pm mass meeting at the high school auditorium as captains are named and volunteers organize precinct by precinct to visit homes, collect bonds and promote the drive across Bannock County.
The Liberty bond campaign opens Saturday April 6 and closes May 4. Terms of payment received by the local committee today provide 5 percent with application, 20 percent by May 28, 35 percent by July 18, and 40 percent by August 15.
German forces renew offensive south of the Somme near Amiens and face stubborn British and French resistance. On a nine mile front north of Montdidier the Germans commit 100000 troops but suffer heavy losses as Haig’s center holds and the left withdraws near Hamel. British reports note repulsed assaults along the Somme Avre front with Canadian cavalry actions praised.
London reports April 5 that British troops have been pressed back slightly east of Amiens to positions east of Villers-Brettoneux. German forces launched large assaults between Luce and the Somme river, but were repulsed with losses for the most part.
Paris reports renewed night attacks by German forces aiming to seize the Amiens railway. French regiments resist with counter attacks and retain the line, capturing Staigman farm southeast of Greivnes and gaining much of Epinette wood north of Orvillers Sorel.
Liberty Loan headquarters gears up with a squad of school boys recruited by Prof. Siders to pass out Liberty Bell hangers at homes early tomorrow. Secretary Holt tracks prospective purchasers as subscriptions roll in. The Liberty Loan committee meets each afternoon at headquarters.
New Zealanders advanced capturing 1000 yards of German trenches after days of stubborn resistance. British reports deny German claims of heavy prisoner captures and call Arras and Vimy ridge fighting among the war’s bloodiest defeats. One battalion near Vauix Vraicourt fired over a quarter of a million rounds in a single day as targets remained dense enemy formations.
A large blaze in Kansas City Missouri started in the west and by six o clock last evening threatened the entire business portion. Ten factories and warehouses are burning as fire crews from both Kansas Citys fight the rapidly spreading flames. Loss on a conservative estimate already reaches 2500 dollars.
Washington reports 400 photographers registered in the draft ordered to mobilize at Madison barracks Sackett's harbor New York. A dispatch dated April 15 sent to fifteen states by Crowder states they will be put into the air service.
