Six candidates won primary approval, with Grant Stowell leading in votes for mayor. Stowell thanked supporters and pledged a strong city administration with civic and business leaders, aiming for better welfare for all. Fellow winner W. W. Halsey also expressed appreciation for voter support.
In Boise voters rejected slot machine licensing 6487 to 3462 as Idaho Falls residents ousted four term mayor Ed Fanning with Tom Sutton winning by about 205 votes. The state faced a strong anti slot machine mood reflected in municipal elections.
Fair conditions continue tonight and Thursday with no changes in general. Lows near 30 degrees tonight and highs between 65 and 70 degrees Thursday.

A six month old Irish setter woke occupants during a house fire in Salt Lake City. Mrs Edwin Buck, awakened by the dog's howling in the basement, was knocked to the floor when the animal leaped at her. Flames and smoke then became visible as the fire damaged a front bedroom corner.
In Effingham Illinois the hospital fire at St. Anthony’s left 80 dead or missing. Fifty bodies removed from ruins and 30 missing on AP compiled list. At least 54 survivors reported. Eight thousand residents began burying thirteen newborns among victims.

Plant Chief Leonard E. Johnston becomes manager of the U S atomic energy commission's forthcoming national reactor testing station near Pocatello while continuing as manager of the Knolls atomic power laboratory in Schenectady New York. He will hold both posts until a successor is named. Johnston has served in the atomic energy program since 1944.
Boise river water users will select a new watermaster and two directors for the Idaho Reclamation Association. William E. Welsh, longtime watermaster, has resigned to become secretary manager of the National Reclamation Association. Welsh and Forrest Sower of Boise are the two current directors.
Pocatello voters set a record primary turnout with 4 567 ballots cast for six mayoral candidates and four council seats. Grant Stowell led mayoral votes with 1 722, followed by W W Halsey 1 339. Council candidates were Ray Davis 1 623, Harold Hinckley 1 339, C A Carmack 1 284, Ezra Hawkes 1 178. Runoff for mayor on April 26. Write-ins totaled 16 with small names. The surge is linked to many new residents since the last election.
Allied Civic Forces press for ballot placement of repealing the local slot machine ordinance after filing 2,777 signatures. slot interests liquor dealers and City Attorney Tydeman prepare legal opinions as council rules on petition validity. Reform league checkers count 1,019 valid signatures out of 2,777 gathered for the referendum.
Voters across Georgia turned down a 46 million dollar plan to fund schools hospitals and state services amid rain and mud. With most counties reported the defeat stood about 183214 to 61899 in a three to one margin. The plan aimed to raise taxes for teachers buildings roads and welfare programs possibly via a sales tax.
The Pocatello Tribune reports its best ever first quarter for advertising in 47 years with March adding 18 116 lines over a year ago and national ads up 25 percent. The paper credits Pocatello as the activity center for the new atomic energy plant and thanks loyal supporters.

Three Bannock county commissioners meet with Dr. Carl W. McIntosh president of Idaho State College to discuss exchanging ten Biste line estate lots valued at 30000 for ten adjacent college lots for a new 900000 county hospital. McIntosh will report Idaho State Board of Education action after conference with W H Pete Jensen chair Jack Aljets and R T Hale attend.

Officials scramble for service from wires as in town papers from New York and Baltimore sell out quickly. Radio stations expand news feeds while comic strips air over the air.
