London reports describe Allied efforts against German subs with seaplanes and airships. A submarine sighted eight miles ahead of a merchant convoy was approached by a seaplane at high speed. The aircraft released bombs, one hitting the conning tower as more bombs damaged the wreck.
Geo Creel chairman of the committee on public information and Aviator QO Bounds escaped injury when their arrival plane from Washington failed to land at Pimlico race track. The aircraft was disabled during the landing attempt and both men were shaken but unhurt.
In Chicago April 5 workers in downtown hotels and restaurants threaten strikes over higher pay. They claim war reduced tips deeply and salaries cannot cover living costs. Average pay cited as 30 dollars a month with demands for 40 dollars. One waiter notes tips down about half since the war began.
Hobart Steeley, son of Dr and Mrs O B Steeley of Pocatello, joined the army at eighteen and thus forfeited a late-arriving appointment to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. A telegram noted a vacancy but the boy could not be spared from service, ending the chance to pursue naval training.
The opening hour of the Third Liberty Loan drive saw about $10,000 in bonds distributed or pledged in the city. High school boys organized by Prof. W. R. Siders placed bells on doors and posters around town while a strong volunteer effort expanded canvassing and poster campaigns.
The Liberty Loan committee recorded subscriptions up to 3 o clock in Pocatello. First National had 67 subscribers totaling 10,800 dollars, Citizens' Bank 30 subscribers, Bannock National 25, Stockgrowers 20, First Savings 9 totaling 6,500 and 500 respectively, with a grand total of 24,650 dollars.
Thousands line streets as a 12 000 strong marching unit from Campe parades to mark the opening of the Liberty loan campaign. President Wilson reviews the procession and plans a speech at the Fifth Armory after attending the Camp Meade troops review earlier in the day.
J E Mac Alpine announces Dr HL Brown of the bureau of chemistry will tour the northwest to present grain dust explosion findings. Brown will lecture in Pocatello on April 13 with films and slides. he then visits Blackfoot, Idaho Falls, Saint Anthony, American Falls, Twin Falls, Caldwell, and Weiser through February 23 to educate farmers threshing machine men and millers on the danger and prevention measures.
On the anniversary of U S entry into the war Allied lines hold with Amiens nine miles away as German attempts to break through are described as strong but ineffective. Foch reports the Beece tidal wave broken and 103000 American troops ready to aid the French and British. British and French shells exchange in the Somme valley and Ancre sector with no major infantry action reported overnight.
Washington reports Provost General Crowder has issued April mobilization orders for the second draft. Governors receive the calls and the expected total chega 150,000 men, slightly above the monthly quota of about 800,000 across nine months.
Nellie Totten, 17, was found dead in a hay loft with a bullet wound to the heart and a .38 revolver nearby. Sheriff Mabey and coroner Dr. Ray led an inquest into whether homicide or suicide caused the death. Nellie, employed at Smith Candy, was the daughter of H. H. Totten, a long-time Pocatello resident and Short Line trainman. The body was moved to Beasley Hitler Undertaking Co. for arrangements.
London reports at daybreak German forces launched a major assault on Corbie in the Somme valley. Waves pressed west of Voire wood toward the Amiens road while British lines east of Fonquevilers improved in a prior attack. Weather clearer but aviators face poor visibility.
Paris reports a resumed bombardment at 11 40 this morning while the German attack along the French sector has ceased. Official notes describe violent artillery north and south of the Avre but no infantry actions.
At 5 30 this morning German forces reportedly advanced in waves near Vaire wood in the Somme valley east of Corbie as part of a renewed drive toward Amiens. The British Army in France reported the heavy assault early today.
The War Office announced a improved British position south of the Somme after a counter-attack in the Hangard area late yesterday.
President Wilson faces a proposal from war and labor officials to mobilize the draft to remove industrial slackers. The plan would require all registered men not in productive work to enter such work or lose exemptions. Gambling would be listed as a harmful pursuit.
Washington dated April 6 reports President appoints Edward R. Stettinius as second assistant secretary of war and Fred P. Keppel as third assistant.
Chicago market note dated April 6 reports corn at 1.2655 dollars and oats at 1.87 dollars, indicating price levels for grain traders.
