Rome April 4 Queen Victoria of Sweden long invalid died here today of heart weakness. She was born Sophia Maria Victoria August 7 1862 in Karlsruhe Germany daughter of Grand Duke Frederick of Baden and Grand Duchess Louise and cousin of the former Kaiser. Her marriage to Gustav V made them widely admired democratic rulers of Europe.
New Orleans report says a boy is missing after a fire gutted barn number eight at Jefferson Park race track last night. Four horses were killed and six of ten horses were rescued during the blaze now under investigation.
In Minneapolis on April 4 AP reports croquet players the David Lambrites and fence builders the Johnsons are linked by lawsuits totaling 30025 dollars. The Lambrites allegedly tore down a fence on a vacant lot court and fight erupted. A Johnson daughter seeks 10000 for a broken nose, another 1000 for a kick by John Johnson. Ole Johnson seeks 5026 for rib injuries a broken wooden leg and teeth damage. The Johnsons seek four verdicts against the Lambrites two Johnson daughters and two allies.
Five masked men armed with a machine gun robbed the Union Trust bank on Xenia avenue in Dayton shortly after opening. Three entered the bank, forced employees and customers to the floor, while two waited outside. The loot totaled an estimated 30 000 to 40 000 dollars, the fourth such heist at that bank, with previous sums ranging from 5 000 to 15 000 dollars.
John J. Raskob, Democratic national committee chairman, told the Senate lobby committee he would not bind the party to either side of the prohibition issue and disclosed contributions to the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment totaling about 65,000 to 66,000. He said the party’s convention alone could commit the Democrats on the matter, and noted the wet group sought congressional seats rather than lobbying. Tulsa on April 4 reports two student pilots, Louis Crippin and Joe Bryant, leaped from a flaming plane above a golf course. Bryant fell from about 1,000 feet. Crippin jumped as the craft began a crash-landing, both dying before rescue. Investigators say remaining aboard might have saved them.
Six railroads were ordered by the Interstate Commerce Commission to appear May 1 before examiners to show cause why they should be allowed to continue charging extra fares on fast trains. The inquiry, begun last year, questions the legality of fares in addition to regular passenger and Pullman charges. The Pennsylvania Railroad, Delaware Lackawanna & Western, Michigan, and Erie filed applications to keep the extra charge on faster trains with enhanced facilities.
