Voters passed the day under a calm sky as 1:30 PM tallies showed 789 ballots, with ward totals of 109, 106, 229 and 20. Three men Bert Starwood Hugh Hutchinson and George Sanderson faced challenges in the Second Ward leading to discussions of warrants, while County Attorney Gray refused action without solid proof. By 3:30 PM the total votes reached 1422 with ward tallies of 224 225 381 and 3994, and an expected final turnout around 2200.
Chicago April 4. Major contest centers on municipal ownership of street railways with Republican John M. Harlan opposing Dunne. Harlan supports a referendum and potential subway plan. Dunne promises no new franchises and seeks aggressive action against railways. Prohibitionist Stewart and Socialist Collings also run.
In Hlena Mont April 4 the election yesterday chose only aldermen. Democrats won four seats while Republicans took three.
Secretary Taft approved the Army Board’s recommendation to drop the combined bayonet in favor of two distinct implements. The new bayonet would match the Krag rifle style but be six inches longer, following lessons from Japanese Manchurian warfare.
A Liverpool report via the Soekow from West Africa describes tribal warfare in Liberia. The Pican ioynes attacked estos on March 3, killing 60 men and 80 women. Cestos natives plan a major counter expedition as Soketo forces prepare for a fierce clash.
In Missoula on April 4 the municipal league ticket carried the day. Mayor M Kh C Smith was reelected by a 19 percent plurality. The league also won two of four alderman seats while one Democrat and one Republican were elected. Four tickets contested and turnout was high.

President Roosevelt arrived in Louisville this morning at nine with a large cheering crowd including two thousand children from public institutions. Confederate Veterans Grand Army Spanis War Veterans paraded as his guards of honor before the officials and Governor Beckham. The speaker’s stand overflowed as Roosevelt spoke briefly and then departed for St. Louis at eleven.
Sixteen bodies recovered from Joseph Leiter's Zeigler coal mine with death toll expected to reach thirty five. Steete Mine Inspectors William Akinson and John Graham died in the night shift from smoky air. State Mine Inspector Moan John toured the wreck but fainted. he later said the blast was a powder explosion south of the main shaft. Suspicion of sabotage grows amid tensions over non union labor.
St. Petersburg reports a thwarted assassination attempt on Governor General Trepoff last night. Prince and Princess Henry of Prussia arrived at Tsarkoe Selo for a family visit to the Empress and Grand Duchess Sergius. Princess Henry will stay. the Prince plans a quick return to Berlin.
Steubenville Ohio April 4 Peter Hardy a young man was killed last night by President Roosevelt's train at Mingo Junction He was run over while attempting to board an east bound freight train The incident was reported as a fatal accident connected to the presidential train's movements.

Judge Huston, longtime Idaho legal figure and former U S attorney, died at his Boise home after a long illness. Born 1833, he served as U S attorney for Idaho, 1869, and spent years on the Idaho Supreme Court. He leaves a widow, a daughter Mrs Carrie Lernard, and a son Dr Collister Huston.
Washington April 4 The Geological Survey director notes Idaho settlers misread Reclamation Service plans for the Minidoka irrigation project. Engineers may ultimately include a pumping plant but need careful study as gravity systems remain the current focus.
Spokane April 4 Patrolman H W Stolke was shot by robbers during a safeblowing at H J Shim & Company. Stolke fell near the railroad tracks and was left for dead. the robbers escaped after failing to open the safe. He lies in hospital with a chance of recovery. a $500 reward is offered by the mayor.
The U S supreme court today ruled on a suit by two New York exporting firms to recover duties paid on merchandise sent to Manila between the treaty nullification with Spain and October 1901. The decision aligns with the fourteen diamond rings case, holding that once title passed to the United States there was no insurrectional gravity granting the island foreign status for tariff purposes.

Oregon Short Line has told Utah Construction to start the Malad Valley branch, an about twenty eight mile line from the Garland spur end to Malad City. The project will connect Corlone with southern Idaho markets and fertile regions nearby, with dirt work to begin within days.
Lincoln April 4 Governor Mickey tatay vetoed the Karst bill authorizing a two thousand dollar bond issue for a twine plant at the state penitentiary. He says the scheme serves business policy and is not authorized by the constitution.
