Mexican government bulletins report bitter fighting at Jimenez with rebels hemmed in by heavy federal fire. Casualties ranged with 25 federals dead and 50 rebels captured. generals Calle and Almazan declare the rebels demoralized and losing ground.
April 2 reports Count Paul Keglevic a wealthy Hungarian landowner was arrested for attempting the life of his family doctor who he claimed visited the countess too often. Police say the count fired at the doctor but all shots missed after a fierce struggle during which the physician freed himself.
An insurance adjuster and a post office inspector report $30,000 worth of commercial black diamonds vanished in the March 22 plane wreck near Dixon Illinois. Ashes and top soil were sifted without traces found. samples sent to New York for further analysis.
Henry Van Steenberger of Harmony Grove near Stockton died after attempting to drink gallons of wine in a bet. He toppled over just as a physician arrived. Alcoholism listed as the cause. His widow and five children survive.
Reports filed with the interstate commerce commission show 2,568 persons died in highway grade crossing accidents in 1928, up 197 from 1927. Injured totaled 6,667, up from 6,613, and 5,800 accidents at grade crossings occurred, 160 more than the prior year.
In Waynesville North Carolina on April 2 two men Joe Ray 43 and Walter McCracken 35 confronted each other over a boarding house keeper and exchanged gunfire at close range. Ray died from four head and body shots McCracken died from two shots to the head. No inquest was held.
Chicago April 2 Venus and Cleopatra are linked to ancient dye and hair techniques say Hatt Dressers' Assoc. president Elim Rohdo. He cites Cleopatra braiding hair between hot stones and claims Mohammed invented henna dye after discovering cray hair. The tale aims to show early beauty innovations.
Thousands in Paris paid last respects to Ambassador Herrick at the American embassy as French officials nobility and citizens filed to sign the bier register. The ambassador’s body lay in rest with violets and a portrait of Lindbergh nearby while staff recalled decades of service. Cardinal Dubois and Marshal Foch aide Major Hopital were among mourners. In Ottawa and London, others observed the event alongside Canadian and American colonies. A separate New Orleans dispatch reported the captain and crew of a Canadian rum ship in a conspiracy case, with a hearing continued for one week.

Raton New Mexico won the opening game of the national high school tournament at the University of Chicago 24 to 23 over Portsmouth New Hampshire. Captain Kruger scored twice and hit a free throw to give Raton the lead late. Easterners led 11 to 10 at halftime, 19 to 16 after three quarters.
Chicago April 2 In Cook county employes did not receive semi monthly salaries yesterday. County Treasurer George P Harding said he hoped the situation would be resolved soon though he could not say when funds would be available. The payroll due yesterday totaled about 930000 affecting mothers’ penalty on women and payments to the children’s home.
In Chicago eleven ward runoff elections test Mayor Thompson's America First platform and control of the city council. Pre election violence flared in the thirty sixth ward as three men were arrested for slugging newsboys distributing favorable coverage of Leonard M. Rice who opposes Alderman Eugene L Ausland. Police guards and roving squads were set for polling places, with extra squads in the notably bitter forty second ward.
In a federal case in which C E Jones faced charges under the Harrison narcotic act for selling morphine to a government agent, the jury began deliberations at noon after the defense moved to dismiss the indictment. Jones testified he did not declare the agent an addict and described the visit to his Dubois office and the discussion over morphine dosage and methods of administration.
Atlanta reports that former Warden John W. Snook faced accusations of lax control at the federal penitentiary. Special agents interviewed inmates about women visitors and narcotics, while Mrs Mab Walker Willebrandt plans court action. Snook denies allegations and cites government document falsification claims.
Naco Arizona was hit by four missiles from a Mexican rebel plane in an attack that wounded Ferry Baker of Alliance and caused terror in the border town. Two bombs landed on American soil, with damage initially described as extensive in the business district. Mexican casualties were reported as two killed and several wounded. American troops were placed on guard along the border as the crossborder action continued under General Fausto Topete.

Judge James Nathan Kimball, judge of the Second district, died in Ogden after a long illness at age 80. She wept as prosecutors questioned her about details of Aimee Semple McPherson disappearance and hinted that the full truth may not yet be told.
