Senate Panel Approves Foreign Arms Aid Bill With China Cap
A Senate joint committee approved a 1.314 billion dollar foreign arms aid bill with up to 75 million for Nationalist China, but most funds tied to a European defense plan and long-range approvals. The panel split 19 to 3 to make 1 billion for NATO members, with 100 million immediate, 400 million later, and 500 million as contract authority. China aid passed 11 to 9 on condition of reform and a future decision by President Truman. The measure faces a tough Senate floor fight as House action limits aid and reconciliation looms.
