The army approved plans for a world’s longest suspension bridge from Staten Island to Brooklyn via the Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority. The 4,620 foot span aims to ease travel from Long Island and New England to the south and west, despite navigation hazards and wartime destruction concerns. A tunnel was dismissed as too costly.
