Wheat Jam Threatens Rail Grid As Texas Harvest Looms
Washington editorial notes rail experts foresee a possible general embargo on wheat this summer to prevent terminal flooding from record acreage. Rail officials dislike government opposition to a plan to divert 300 million bushels from farms to big terminals before the new crop. The scheme risks political fallout and hinges on loan maturities ending April 30. The jam-up stems from continuous threshing by combines starting northward from the Texas panhandle in late May.
