Pocatellans Told Goal Of United World Federalists
Neal Potter, Washington state economics instructor and state chairman of United World Federalists, spoke at the Pocatello library outlining the group's aim to strengthen the United Nations toward a world federal government with power to enforce peace. He cited polls and a congressional resolution supporting stronger world governance. The organization, formed in 1947, now has 45 000 members in 600 local chapters and operates in 22 countries. International convention is planned for Stockholm in August. Cord Meyer Jr. serves as national president.

China relaxes shipping rules in Shanghai amid port restrictions
The Communist government eased foreign shipping limits allowing ships to sail from Shanghai to other Chinese ports with special permission. The measure also requires 24 hour prior navigation permits and submission of records, cargo declarations, and crew lists. Foreign-owned tugs may operate the Whangpoo river for owners but not for cargo or passenger profit. Authorities will conduct customs checks and passenger screenings for inbound and outbound vessels. An earlier mine-laying mystery remains unresolved, with no confirmation of a sweep by fishing vessels near the river mouth. The Star of Suez was diverted to Tianjin after the river was deemed unsafe.
