About 2,000,600 Italian farm laborers quit fields in a 24 hour general strike in support of 1,000,000 seasonal workers idle since May 16. Police were strengthened as unions warned of possible violence and talks with farm owners labored to avert harvest disruption.
A new 32 page study by Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Beane, released by H. S. Howell in Pocatello, analyzes public utilities from 1929 to today. It contrasts steady net income in utilities with swings in manufacturing and details 44 companies plus systemic capitalization, earnings and dividends.
Two aged 11 and 14 who fled Van Nuys after a hardware store robbery with rifles were captured in Bakersfield. They carried a .22 pistol but offered no resistance and will be returned to the San Fernando valley juvenile authorities. The comedian W. C. Fields was laid to rest in Hollywood yesterday nearly two and a half years after his death on Christmas day 1946. His son Magda Michael and longtime friend Carlotta Monti witnessed the cremation two weeks after a court ordered it despite widow Harriet Fields objections on religious grounds.
