Coal Mine Layoffs Not Felt Locally Amid Strike

The stabilization strike by the United Mine Workers will not affect Pocatello area rail service beyond engine transfers. UP trains will swap diesel engines for oil burners as coal traffic slows nationwide, but local layoffs or furloughs are not anticipated. Union coal miners plan a one week layoff followed by a 10 day vacation, with contracts expiring June 30 and doubt they will return for a final week.
