Five Tyhee residents escaped a pre dawn fire that razed their five room home and beauty shop. The Stewart family lost their belongings with about 10 000 dollars in damage. Fire and water supply issues hampered suppression as neighbors assisted and the naval ordnance plant responded.
In Tyhee the Joe Stewart family loses home and possessions to a morning blaze. Neighbors organize aid with Mrs. J D Cherry and the Seventh Ward Relief Society leading a temporary basement home and donations of clothing beds and food. Local residents praise neighborly spirit and question city life resilience.
Kenneth West, 20, reports losing his fiancée Virginia Flora, 19, after meeting in a New York bus station. He believes she may be in the St Louis area and planned to marry in Lubbock, Texas. He left a letter with a hospital, now destroyed, and Montgomery search continues.
Moscow reports a two part decree revaluing the ruble on a sliding scale up to 10 old rubles per one new, ending rationing with a unified price system. Stalin and Zhdanov sign the government and party measure to strengthen exchange rates and abolish supplies rationing.
Washington Republican Harold Knutson, chair of the Ways and Means committee, predicted a tax cut law by spring with a possible 57 percent reduction for lower income taxpayers. He said he plans to introduce split returns to strengthen the bill and claimed enough Senate votes to override a veto.
Two Pocatellans, Mrs Herbert L Cline 28 and her nine year old daughter Bonnie Jean, were injured tonight in a car crash four miles south of Nampa Idaho. Also hurt were John Munger 72 of Star James Bean 15 and Don Dennie 14 of Route 5 N. All victims hospitalized at Samaritan in Nampa. Deputy Sheriff Geo Denny investigated saying the Cline car and David L Gess 25 Route 1 Eagle collided at a road junction.
Sen. Glen H. Taylor of Idaho indicated he would consider running as vice president in 1948 on a progressive third party slate led by Henry A. Wallace. He criticized the Democratic Party for abandoning its principles and said he would feel a duty to offer Americans a chance to oppose the current foreign and domestic program.
House Republicans, led by Charles A. Halleck, unveil a four point anti inflation plan aimed at forcing passage. They seek Democratic consent to debate under a motion and, failing that, plan a power move to send the bill to the floor with amendments. Halleck accuses the administration of blocking price cuts and politicizing the issue.
The Bureau of Reclamation plans mid river wells in the Minidoka North Side division to track water that vanishes in the Lost River sinks and reappears at Thousand Springs near Hagerman. A compromise for irrigation and water rights faced sharp North Side opposition from the Rupert extension association.
A missing co pilot from Sioux Falls South Dakota identified as 1st Lt John R Sacker escaped death after bailed out over Allegheny mountains during an A 26 crash near Bellefonte Pennsylvania The warplane crashed in a wheat field at Howard ten miles north of town Captain Kenneth Lane the pilot is believed killed with five crew members.
Gen Edward J. Higgins aged 88, former International Commander of the Salvation Army, died Sunday at Fair Oaks sanitarium near Summit New Jersey. He retired in 1934 after a clash over Booth family leadership and was succeeded by Gen Evangeline Booth.
Simplot Fertilizer Co and Westvaco Chlorine Products Co announce a multi million dollar electric furnace plant to be built on 500 acres near Pocatello. The facility will produce metallic phosphorus for fertilizer and industry and will spur further phosphate industry expansion in Idaho. Start is planned for spring 1949 with 20 miles of Union Pacific spur from Ft. Hall mines.
The weatherman describes a confusing outlook with cloudy conditions on Monday, occasional snow expected Monday night and Tuesday, and temperatures ranging from 29 to 36 degrees. He notes little overall temperature change.
