Festive But Fire Safe Is Rule For Home Decorations
Safety rules urged for holiday decor by National Board of Fire Underwriters engineers. Guidelines include keeping trees away from fireplaces, avoiding cotton or paper decorations, using nonflammable aluminum wrapping at the tree base, and keeping a live tree outdoors until Christmas. Do not place candles near wreaths and ensure bulbs are six inches from flammable material. Keep stockings away from sparks, use a metal mantel screen, inspect wiring, avoid overloading outlets, keep tree water topped up, and limit lights to short, supervised periods.
