Winds Fan Forest Fire In Payette National Forest
High winds hindered firefighters in the Payette National Forest for Friday with two fresh flareups on the west and south. An aerial survey at 4 p.m. showed little new acreage burned, though about 6,000 acres of timberland had already been destroyed by eight days of fire. Forest supervisor John T. Mathews said most firelines held despite the blaze jumping in a few spots. In Boise National Forest 14 new fires sparked by lightning Thursday night were largely under control as crews extinguished some and contained the rest.
