17 Year Old Schoolboy Olympics Star Hero
Bob Mathias, a 17-year-old Tulare California student, won the decathlon at the London Olympics with 7139 points, ahead of France’s I Heinrich and world records, signaling a possible bid for a second consecutive title in 1952 after a long rest. He led in the 110 meter hurdles and discus, finished second in pole vault, then endured a grueling 1500 meter finale in fog to seal the victory. He earned praise from his mother at the finish and vowed to rest before retuning for 1952.
