National VFW Chief Visits Pocatello Criticizes Rankin Pension Plan
Lyall T. Beggs national commander of the Veterans of Foreign Wars arrived by plane to inspect the local post in Gate City. He called Rankin's defeated veterans pension bill a measure that would have bankrupted the nation and urged support for need based pensions. Beggs supported current bills offering $72 monthly for single veterans under $2,000 income or $3,000 for married couples, and $50 to $65 monthly for disability cases. He also attacked American Communists and Rep Rankin, urging broader alliances including Spain in NATO.

Attorney Denies Mind Change On Slot Machine Ballot
Pocatello city attorney F. E. Tydeman said he has not changed his mind about putting the state machine repeal issue on the April 26 election ballot. He dismissed rumors of a shift in opinion after advising council that the measure could legally appear on the ballot. The Allied Civic Forces petition with 1,748 registered voters backs keeping or repealing the slot ordinance. A court injunction could halt the move. Tydeman will meet with city clerk Bert Reese and Allied Civic Forces attorney Ben Peterson to discuss ballot procedures.
