Near 70 000 Workers Idle In Walkout-Layoffs Wave
New York taxi drivers and Pan American Airways radio operators joined a national wave of labor actions causing widespread idling. About 70 000 workers were idle with 500 000 miners taking a holiday for the eight hour day anniversary. Three Pan Am flights were canceled and a strato cruiser inauguration faced disruption as unions press for recognition and crew radio operators. Police patrolled streets in New York City as a taxi strike emptied cabs and 12 arrests were reported by noon.
