A fragmented account recalls a condemned man facing the guillotine in 1873. The narrative voice laments wrongful accusation, describes the execution, and shifts to speculative futurist visions of polar climates, new continents, and oceanic upheavals. It also notes political appointments and a state’s legal culture.
Reports state two bronze groups designed by Larkin Meade of Flores Italy have arrived and will be placed at once on the Lincoln Monument grounds. The infantry and naval groups honor Union troops and the Mississippi campaign with vivid figures. Each group weighs about four tons and was cast by the Chicopes Alma Company Mimuchasette. A bill in the General Assembly governs funding, with completion now projected for 1882 barring delays.
An early morning brawl in a saloon spilled into gunfire between Joe Gavin and Thomas McGrath. Gavin fired a pistol, McGrath drew a revolver, they wrestled, and a cartridge exploded leaving Gavin briefly incapacitated. Officers Bogs and Cournvea intervened, pistol knocked away, and both men were restrained.

Years ago Reverend William E. Biggs of the Southern Methodist Church moved to Chapell Hell and later to a frontier county to preach. A hostile crowd reportedly forced him to drink what was described as poison whisky, leading to his agonizing death. Prior events included gunfire at his home. The Savannah News reports the incident in a preliminary account.
