A stern lieutenant attached to an eastern fort earned a gambling reputation by betting on every provocation. He was moved to Kansas where a colonel joked about his betting. The bet escalated to stripping the colonel to prove a back mark, ending with a laughed loss and a note about the shirt. Oil for old stones remark follows on oil stone care.
