Political conventions loom in Nevada as parties set dates

The Democratic State convention will convene September 11 at 11 in Reno’s Marketin theatre with Sam Pickett calling order. Eight delegates mostly favor Senator Pittman, one from Eureka opposes unanimous nomination. Republicans plan September 11 at 11 in the T and D theatre with George Sanford presiding, Ninety delegates listed with Platt leading, Norcross and Howe trailing.

Prominent Nevada Instructor Hamill Murdered Near Twin Falls

News from Carson City reports the murder of F. Thomas Hamill, vice principal of Carson City High School. His body was found near his homestead cabin south of Twin Falls, Idaho, after a head blow. Two brothers aged 11 and 12 confessed to the crime, saying Hamill surprised them during a cabin robbery. The body was sent to his parents in Legion, Virginia.

Nevada cattle stock gifted to University herd

Six Hereford heifers aged two years, valued at $8000, were added to the University of Nevada herd held by rancher John H. Cazier of Wells. The gift marks the first step in a cooperative plan by Nevada cattlemen and the university to improve statewide livestock quality. The stock will be bred and the resulting stock used by ranchers to boost herd value. The university already has a strong collection of high bred stock and will continually expand it through this program.

Wrecks Averted by Block Signals at Elko

High wind moved a boxcar from a side track onto the main line near Elko on Saturday, triggering the automatic electric block system. Passenger train No. 10, two miles out, stopped as the signal warned of danger and a flagman checked the track. The car was switched back and the train continued, demonstrating the block system prevented a possible serious wreck.

Sale of Todian Lands at Willits California

The Secretary of the Interior announces a public sale of undisposed lands in the Round Valley Indian Reservation at Willits, California, starting August 29, 1916 at 1 a.m. Purchasers must pay at least one third down with the remainder in two equal installments at 5 percent interest on deferred payments. The land is mountainous with brush and timber, mainly for firewood, including madrona and oaks, with Douglas fir of limited value. A schedule of lands and details are available from the U.S. Land Offices in San Francisco and Eureka.

The move unites two historic bodies, expanding cross border technical cooperation and professional accreditation.

Ely Miners Demand Better Protection After Mine Deaths

In the Ely district miners refuse to return to the Ruth mine following the accidental deaths of two men. Rumors of a strike circulate as workers press for eight hour shifts, a $4.50 minimum wage, and no overtime. They demand regulated shouting times and that only skilled bosses and workers operate mine motors during shift changes.

County Assessors Hold First Session in Carson City

Carson City hosted the state board of equalization with sheriffs from all counties in attendance. A special Women’s Belief Corps meeting passed a resolution asking Congress man W G Roberts to deliver the presentation speech for the silk flags procured by Nevada corps for the battleship Nevada. The silver service presentation was assigned to Senator Key Pittman, with the big punch bowl and silverware to officers. The flags and silverware will be shipped to Washington soon.

Salt Lake Route Renamed Los Angeles and Salt Lake

The San Pedro name is dropped from the Salt Lake route as the company adopts the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad Company title. The change aims to shorten names and reduce billing errors by removing S P initials. San Pedro is now part of Los Angeles, so the harbor terminus is no longer listed.

Goldfield Consolidated Mines reports its new 1000 ton flotation plant will be fully in operation soon. The initial 500 ton unit has run at 450 to 500 tons daily with high metal extraction.
