Santa Maria replica dazzles crowds at Spain Columbus fete

Spain celebrates the Columbus discovery with a parade of fetes lasting to October. The replica Santa Maria, a 240 ton caravel, draws amazement beside modern ships like the Shenandoah. Observers note its open deck and precise casco as crews of Castille and Leon train under royal orders. Columbus Day is urged as a national holiday with speeches praising discovery and enlightenment.

Monument to Columbus Marking Watlings Island Discovery

Walter Wellman reports on the Chicago Herald's 1801 expedition to Watlings Island to locate Columbus's first landfall and erect a memorial. The team, aided by Governor Shea and local officials, sailed from New York to Nassau, then to Watlings, where they identified a site matching Columbus journals. They built a coral stone monument, raised an American flag, and prepared a ceremonial dedication amid tropical operations and local celebration plans.
