Denver Chamber backs Denver and El Paso line to El Paso
A Denver mass meeting at the Chamber of Commerce pushed the Denver and El Paso Short Line as the leading new railroad to Denver among eight proposals. With local endorsement assured, construction toward White Oake and El Paso was soon to begin. Gov Evans Col Houghton and Jefferson Raynolds praised the route, noting its potential to open New Mexico and Mexico trade, spur coal and mineral shipments, and spur eastern bond funding. The Denver and El Paso Railway Co was organized March 5th, with Judge Wells to file incorporation papers and a construction company to handle the work.
