The Spanish Fascist Army, about 8,000 strong, entered Toledo Sunday afternoon after routing government defenders and freeing unknown numbers of comrades from the Alcazar. Government troops fled, Madrid ordered reinforcements, and warships at Bilbao bombarded to supply the city as fascists closed the path to Madrid.
Washington reports the schooner George and Earl once on the Coast Guard blacklist and chased north to New York Harbor where customs agents seized the vessel after spotting it in the East River. The ship carried 32000 gallons of alcohol. Rum row and speakeasy activity faded from the era as enforcement tightened.

WACO Texas Sept 28 Thousands are homeless in central Texas and at least four are dead as the Little River surges to record flood stages. The Brazos River began receding and twenty five hundred homeless sought emergency relief. Seventeen towns below Waco lost gas when the companys suspension bridge washed out over the Brazos. Rains were general across northern central and southwestern Texas.
National Emergency Council reports Alaska expenditures totaling 3 960 904 through June 1936 under the Emergency Relief Act 1935. Unexpended balance stands at 778 837. Direct relief 2 729 506 highways roads and streets 563 899 public buildings 23 185 conservation worth 585 812 electricity water and sewer systems 8 500 miscellaneous projects 988 administrative expenses 49 103.
Bulletin from Bandon Oregon reports seven fatalities from a forest fire that swept the town late Saturday night and into Sunday. Names listed include John Rieder Ida Hill Daniel Koontz 70 Mrs Charles McCullock 65 George Williams and Jack Batt. Firefighters battled through day and night to save more towns along the southern Oregon coast amid fears of a reverse wind and additional losses. Loss estimated at one and a half million dollars.
Berlin reports Lawrence Simpson of Kirkland Washington a U S seaman was sentenced to three years in a German prison minus fourteen months already served after admitting involvement in plotting a popular government. He claimed four communists planned the venture with balloons and propaganda devices.
Campbell Ohio police used two tear gas bombs to disperse a crowd of striking students in front of Memorial High School. Classes were suspended as about a thousand students protested the transfer of instructor Michael Graban to a grade school.
