Japanese air fleets bombed Nanking for hours as American and British protests were ignored. Chinese fighters challenged the raids, crashing several Japanese bombers. About forty Chinese civilians were killed or wounded, with twenty Americans endangered near the embassy area. Government buildings remained largely unscathed.
In New York during a large Legion Parade J Comer of Nome told the crowd he was far from Nome but there’s no place like Nome. J Thomas of Sitka quipped his dogs hurt from the journey, noting Alaska’s preferred travel by dogs.
Lincoln Ellsworth plans a Arctic search operation using Jacqueline Cochran and Floyd Odlum to locate missing Russian aviators who left Moscow last month en route to the United States. He will base in interior Alaska and pursue a systematic expedition to locate the pilots. Ellsworth cites prior polar flights and Arctic work.
From Hong Kong reports three hundred lives feared lost in Curtin during a fourth attack of a day of six raids within twenty four hours. Foreign observers describe piles of bodies in the streets of a southern Chinese metropolis with unofficial estimates of deaths and property damage rising hourly.
Nome City Council approved purchasing a $3700 Allis-Chalmers WK tractor with electric start and winter accessories to modernize the fire department. The vote was four to one with O’Connor dissenting, and delivery is planned to arrive on the last boat from Seattle on October 9. A radiator guard bumper was also ordered.
Seattle chapter of the New Guild filed charges against the Seattle Post-Intelligencer owner War Randolph Hearst and editor John Boettiger. The National Labor Relations Board Seattle office announced the action following recent dismissals in the paper's classified advertisement department.
