Soviet Arctic expedition commander Papanin reports the North Pole camp has drifted far south of its initial position past the 86th parallel. An icebreaker will lift the camp, rather than an overland push, to resume study of Arctic conditions.
William Loeb aged 70 former secretary to President Theodore Roosevelt died in Glencove New York after a pneumonia attack. He rose from professional stenographer to business executive and vice president of American Smelting. A widow and a son survive him in Glencove.
In Mexico City Leon Trotsky argues Russia cannot wage war with Italy or any power due to internal pressures. He doubts an Italo-Russian clash is imminent and suggests Stalin aims to reassure European资本ists by upholding the status quo. He questions Russian involvement in the Chinese/Japanese conflict and reports of planes sent to Shanghai.
Fragmented report shows a vote down Spanish government bid for a seat on the League Council. Delegates from several nations opposed the proposal as tensions influenced by pending issues and regional alignments.
The Associated Press reports Nanking fell under heavy air attacks with civilians killed. U S Ambassador Johnson and three aides left by patrol boat Luzon up the Yangtze toward Wuhu to observe the Japanese demand for foreign withdrawal.

A riot at Folsom Prison on a Sunday left Warden Larkin attacked and Guard H E Martin stabbed to death. Convicts Clyde Stevens and Benny Kuchatski were killed in the fighting as long term inmates joined the assault and beat guards in the custody wing.
In Monton on September 20 a crash led to a search for Fear Wilkins after Captain Rankin was sent to investigate weather conditions. An additional aircraft was engaged but located about three hundred miles away for the search efforts.
