Los Angeles reports the death of Edward Laurence Doheny at age seventy nine following a prolonged illness. The oil magnate helped build one of the world's largest fortunes from California and Mexican oil fields and passed away at 8 PM in Los Angeles.
In Pittsburgh on Monday night Fred Die Miller defended the NAB featherweight title with a unanimous decision over Eddie Zivic in ten snappy rounds. Miller weighed 128 pounds to Zivic's 132 as the smaller champion outboxed the heavier challenger.
UNDATED Sept 10 reports say Italian troop movements along the Ethiopian border suggest an early war offensive. Selassie instructed his Geneva envoy to reject all proposed settlement plans. England views Hitler’s reception of the Italian ambassador as an attempt to slow French support at Geneva. Hagland has concentrated her home and Mediterranean fleets for any eventuality.
The Republican National Committee said the nation needs a complete rest and cure, not merely a breathing spell. The statement followed a letter to Roy Howard accusing Roosevelt of undermining calm thinking and promoting Democratic doctrines.
Senator Huey P Long of Louisiana died at 4 10 AM in Baton Rouge after a gunshot wound. Doctors performed one operation and five blood transfusions during a long effort to save him. His widow, who stood by him during earlier charges, was present at the hospital.
Abe Shushan of the New Orleans Levee Board announced the death of Senator Fiuey P. Long in Baton Rouge. He died four minutes before physicians confirmed in his hospital room. Mrs. Long and their three children were brought out of the hospital under strain.
In Oviedo Spain Jose Rivers faced trial on illegal firearm possession. A state firearms expert said the rusty pistol could not be fired and the defense offered to be a target. The prosecutor then pointed the weapon at Attorney Alvaro and fired, creating a loud bang and a hole in the wall. Alvaro was sentenced to three years in prison.
The Soviet icebreaker Sadko said it would explore a newly reported Arctic island, a move tied to a theory that such landmass acts as a barrier to polar ice. The Red Islands were thought to be part of a submerged mountain chain extending toward Europe.
In Baton Rouge on September 10 Dr E L Sanderson ruled the cause of death a gunshot wound to the abdomen with no immediate complications. Senator Long’s brother Dr G S Long said the bullet pierced the colon and kidney. An investigation is expected. Political allies mourn while opponents anticipate a bid for control. Long voiced concern for his family and university supporters as arrangements proceed for lying in state at the five million dollar Capitol building. Continued on Page Three.

George M Allen longtime Klondyke Nugget publisher died in Toppenish after a heart attack at the hospital Monday night following an appendicitis operation. He helped found the Dawson paper during the gold rush with Eugene Allen and was a Seattle native graduate of the University of Washington. Survived by brother Pliny Allen two daughters Mrs Ruth McCarey and Mrs Thurston a son and widow and a younger daughter all in Toppenish and Seattle. He was a member of the Toppenish Chamber of Commerce and Rotary Club.
Oregon Republican leader Charles L. McNary said the new deal breathing spell will permit retroversion of expenditures and aid business materially. He noted substantial improvement in business and supported the president’s stance to restore confidence.
