Coast Guardsmen seized the British oil schooner Popocatapelt and three high speed American launches off Cape May New Jersey. About five thousand cases of whiskey and other liquors were confiscated along with vehicles and crew held for questioning.
Senator William G. McAdoo of California, president of the National Aeronautical Association, declared that America must lead in the air and develop stronger air defenses due to unrest in Europe.
Rome reports in Azione Coloniale that Italy may seek England's exclusion from Egypt if Britain is seen as a danger to Italian African interests. The semi official journal argues British Mediterranean span and African reach threaten Italian colonies.
Mrs Nellie Brooke Stull the self described Cupid for 1500 lonely hearts opened the National Convention of the Widows and Widowers Club in Chicago. She announced delegates could marry on the spot if they chose a partner found at the convention but warned of potential trouble from such rapid unions.

Reports from Baton Rouge say Huey P. Long weakened after a bullet wound with blood transfusions given. He was shot in the abdomen at the State House as a bodyguard and an unidentified assailant were involved. the capitol was cleared and medical staff warned of grave conditions.
An unidentified man was killed by sub-machine gun fire. Long was rushed to Our Lady of the Lake Sanitarium and underwent immediate surgery. Witnesses said two bullets struck the senator near the abdomen as blood streamed from his mouth. The attack occurred as the legislature gathered for a special session amid bills opposing federal control of relief funds.
Dr. Arthur K. Vidrine assumed immediate control as the senator underwent surgery. Lt Governor James A. Noe accompanied him to the operating room. The shooter, identified as A. C. Weiss Jr. of Baton Rouge, fired as the senator walked down the corridor. condition described as serious but not yet critical.
In Geneva on September the League of Nations named a sub committee to address the Italy Ethiopia dispute. Britain France Spain Poland and Turkey form the panel. Mussolini telephoned to say Italy no longer insists on membership, as talks continue toward Paris aimed at avoiding war.
Lewiston Idaho reports a mysterious lethal illness prompting school closures. Physicians say the disease causes widespread septic throat symptoms and complications. Several cases have proven fatal, delaying openings planned for September 1.
