The Standard Vacuum Oil Company withdrew from the large oil concessions in wartime Ethiopia, a move Secretary of State Hull called highly desirable to reduce embarrassment to the U S and other governments working to maintain peace.
Cabinet members return to London ready for swift action if needed as Italian resolve appears eroded by oil concessions in Britain and the United States. Eden may refrain from sanctions while Addis Ababa reports Ethiopian women may seek armed roles amid the crisis.
Rescuers estimate four to five hundred dead as the hurricane savaged the Florida Keys. Gov ernment and Red Cross relief rushes in while evacuations proceed. Matecumbe, Plantation, and Key Largo report heavy losses with collapsed hospitals and destroyed camps. Communication lines are down and crews survey the wreckage.
