Minority members criticize the naval appropriation plan as inadequate calling for a comprehensive program to place the nation’s navy second among the Allies. The naval appropriation bill totaling 241 million dollars is reported to the House for action.
Charles Sulzer was unanimously named as delegate to Congress by the territorial democratic convention in Juneau this afternoon. He declared he is an Alaskan and will work for Alaska’s welfare and advancement if elected.
Ti speech aroused intense enthusiasm as delegates cheered themselves hoarse before the energy subsided.
Pursuant to an order of Local No. 868 B I L A members are notified that the summer wage scale of seven dollars fifty cents per day of eight hours and one dollar per hour overtime becomes effective June 1. Overtime rates apply to all portions of the eight hour day. AL Nicholson President.
Paris May 28 The German assault to break French lines at Verdun fails to prevail as official reports claim French forces hold the fortress line and push from Haudramont quarries to Thiermont farm. German attacks near Le Mort Homme are repulsed while French progress is noted west of Fort Douaumont and north of Thiermont. The clash is described as the fiercest engagement of the western campaign with continuous, day and night fighting.
A warrant was issued for Jafet Lindeberg on contempt charges after he refused to answer questions about his mining property. Police chase the Nome miner who fled toward Seattle to avoid jail, with Judge Deasey ordering apprehension if located.
Field dispatch from Mexico reports that Candellario Cervantes a Villa lieutenant was killed by American expeditionary forces near Los Cruces. The later update confirms two American soldiers and two Mexican bandits died in the engagement while American engineers conducted reconnaissance with a small escort.
Raymond Robbins of Chicago has been selected for the temporary chairmanship of the Progressive convention. The choice was made at a meeting of the executive committee of the Progressives.
Vallejo May 25. The collier Nanshan has been named to serve as a supply ship and tender for the Alaska railroad commission. The vessel is to relieve government burden by cutting transportation costs for building materials amid higher rates from northern carriers.
In Athens on May 28 the entire cabinet resigned after a serious dispute over Allied actions and future encroachments in Greek territory. The king pressed for steps to curb entente interference, while ministers disagreed on methods to protect Greek neutrality.
At San Antonio military HQ the war department denied General Funston’s request for additional artillery to bolster border defense against possible raiders. The notice follows ongoing border tensions and outlines a limited arsenal stance.
