Empress of Ireland Sinks After Collision With Storstadt
The Empress of Ireland bound for Liverpool was rammed by the collier Storstadt near the St Lawrence and sank within minutes. About 675 of 1400 aboard perished while survivors were rescued at Rimouski and by the Storstadt amid heavy fog and rough seas. Captain Kendall stayed by the ship as it went down, with many acts of heroism noted.
