About five hundred people were believed killed when a dam near El Oro Mexico collapsed at three a.m. burying Tlalpujahua in mud and sand. Twenty nine bodies were recovered in the afternoon as cyanide and mineral deposits from Dos Estrellas Mining operated plant were released.
Hiram J. Gibson aged 73 father of Hoot Gibson died in a California hospital. Grace Bradley and Bill Boyd announced their engagement with marriage date undetermined. Funeral services are planned for Arthur O Reilly aged 32 in Seattle after a three year illness.
A trio of Alaska residents died in Anchorage General Hospital after fatal incidents or illness. Adolph Wendland, 60, perished from chest injuries after being pinned under a tree he felled at Talkeetna and rushed to hospital by Alaska Railroad car. Bessie Carston, 54, formerly of Nome Fairbanks and Seward, died after a long illness and once ran a Nome barber shop. Albert M. Murray, 46, a Cache Creek mine operator, died of a heart attack at his camp. his body was airlifted after a man walked 45 miles to summon a plane. Hugh Brewster, aeronautics inspector, was commissioned to captain in Marine Corps reserves.
From Nome passengers arriving in Fairbanks report flood waters of the lower Yukon inundating Nulato trading post. Housetops show above water and about 200 residents likely escaped by boats as pilots note the river area resembles a huge lake.
Jersey City reports Gladys MacKnight and Donald Wightman convicted of second degree murder for the hatchet slaying of the girl. Prosecutors said the crime occurred in a family dispute with lasting legal action expected.
AP reports two hundred thousand people crossed the Golden Gate Bridge at its opening in San Francisco California as a parade of pedestrians and motorists overwhelmed the new span. Naval planes roared overhead and warships swept beneath the bridge during a broad tactical display marking a dramatic debut.
