London reports the British troopship Transylvania torpedoed by a German submarine while ferrying troops from Liverpool to Europe. Four hundred twelve lives lost including officers and crew, with many troops saved by a returning steamer. Anchor Line awaits fuller details as deliveries continue to Gibraltar.
International News Service reports the French steamer Sontay was torpedoed and sunk May 22 in the Agein sea by a German submarine while traveling from San Jonika to Marseilles. Of 1,245 aboard, 40 were killed and many were wounded or invalids. remaining passengers were being rescued near the Grey clan archipelago.
About ten thousand U S Army members including surgeons and hospital corps arrive in England to form base hospitals for the coming American expeditionary force. A detachment of college students in the ambulance corps travels with the group and British ships escort them into port.
Rome reports two sailing ships submarined in the Adriatic and Tyrrhenian seas for the week ending May 20.
