Twelve Navy airplanes returned to Seattle after war game maneuvers along the Alaskan coast. The squadron left Sitka at 5 40 AM Thursday and landed at Sand Point Naval Air Station at 2 45 PM. Lieutenant Commander Henry P. Stanley led the group and plans called for a flight to San Diego via Astoria and San Francisco. The U S S Wright is en route south from Sitka.
The wives and children of the colonists will rejoin their husbands and fathers this evening after a train ride from Seward. Drawings for land were held yesterday. Colonel Alexander Williams, after thirty seven years in the army and service in Cuba, the Philippines, and World War I, was sentenced to dismissal from the military service. His attorney gave notice of an appeal from the finding that he solicited and obtained two thousand five hundred dollars from an automobile tube firm tied to war contracts. he was acquitted on a separate charge of accepting two thousand dollars. The case, kept secret, will go to a three‑officer review before moving up to the War Department and the President.
FAIRBANKS May 23 Two doctors traveling from Pennsylvania to the Arctic to study the influenza germ arrived by plane. If weather allows they will fly to Kotzebue and on to Barrow, else they will stop at Kotzebue for data. Funded by Colonel Lindbergh and wife with Pan American Airways support. SITKA May 24 Fisherman Gust Tuftland 33 burned to death when the halibut boat Augusta exploded while refueling. Captain Martin, Engineer Egil, and Mate Winter were badly burned and hospitalized. another boat, Happy of Ketchikan, narrowly avoided damage.
